As far as the remains being "mummified." last summer in Texas was extremely hot and dry, above and beyond our usual hot and dry.  Just the kind of conditions that would produce mummification ala natural.  

Thanks Flutter for the info. I thought in the heat a body would just decompose to bones quicker in the heat. I wonder if humidity is a factor as well. Anywho, thanks again for the info::MonkeyAngel::

Lack Of Rain, Mummification May Actually Help Experts Identify Remains

ABILENE, Texas -- The process of identifying the remains that were found in Big Spring Tuesday afternoon is underway.

The remains have been described as partially mummified, which may be helpful in aiding with identification.

“The mummification of the soft tissue is going to occur surrounding where the environment is very dry,” said Lauri Martin, a forensic anthropology instructor with the University of Texas system.

Big Spring has been experiencing just such conditions over the last 15 months: It's been hot and dry. The area has received only about 6 inches of rain.

The human body starts to mummify when it loses fluid through evaporation. Thus, a buried body in such a condition will remain somewhat preserved.

For example, comparing a body that's been left unburied for a week to one that has been buried will produce a huge difference in terms of deterioration.

“If it's buried, that's going to slow down the decomposition process quite a bit,” Martin said.

The Big Spring remains found Tuesday are now with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office for analysis. An anthropology lab will also examine the remains.

Experts will be looking for any identifying marks – including scars, tattoos and other marks.

“If you've got the mummification of that soft tissue, you would still have identifiable soft tissue marks,” Martin said.

Authorities believe the remains were at the Big Spring site from six months to two years.

The anthropology lab will first attempt to determine who the victim is by fingerprints.

If a fingerprint is not found, officials will do a dental exam to see if the teeth match any dental records.

DNA identification is a third option, and this would be the most likely option if the remains are badly decomposed.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Shawn Adkins remains the only named suspect in the case of missing teen Hailey Dunn. His attorney told KTXS since the discovery Tuesday of human remains in Big Spring, Adkins has made himself available to law enforcement.

"I'm not comfortable disclosing his exact location and partly for his own safety as well," said attorney Alex Eyssen.

Adkins dated Hailey's mother Billie Dunn on-and-off the last four years.

The two were together in Colorado City on the one year anniversary of Hailey's disappearance.

Dunn's attorney John Young told KTXS Thursday, she and Adkins are no longer a couple.

"There is not a relationship today," Young said, "Nor has there been one in the recent past."

And he says if the remains are Hailey's, they will demand justice.

"I think a lot of the statements that have been attributed to him and others have been incorrect," Eyssen said.

During the investigation, court documents said a search of the family's home found a box containing hundreds of documents focused on mass murderers, serial killers and murders of family members.

Eyssen said this was all based on Shawn's interest in film and literature. Another court document states over 100,000 images of child porn and bestiality were found on a computer at the home of Shawn Adkins' mother in Big Spring.

"We have never, despite numerous requests, confirmed from law enforcement that there have been any of those items discovered and if they have been discovered, which we don't know that, they have not come from any source attributed to Shawn," Eyssen said.

Billie and Shawn are still in a relationship. Eyssen said Shawn Adkins is accessible to police and he has informed them of where he is and how he could be reached. Eyssen is in contact with both state and federal officials.

Human Remains Found in Big Spring Sent for Autopsy

BIG SPRING - The body found in Big Spring is now in Tarrant County for an autopsy.

The remains were shipped out of the Myers Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday morning.

We're told the body was half exposed and half mummified.

No word on when the autopsy results will be available.

Yellow flags pin point the location of bones. Police indicate the remains were found intact and appeared to be those of a teenager. The gender and identification will have to be determined by forensics.

“We will send these remains to the pathologist for autopsy. We will also possibly have someone who specializes in bones have a look at this and see what we have,” Everett said.

The body has been subjected to extreme decomposition. Everett said it's apparent the remains have been at this site for a long time.

grace-land- Thank you! You answered a few of my questions with this post. I'm surprised they were intact, to be frank, given Shawn's "hobbies". But then again, per Billie Dunn's statement analysis (http://seamusoriley.blogspot.com/ ), Shawn was in a hurry the morning Hailey was reported missing.

All eyes were on Big Spring Tuesday as investigators made what could be a big discovery in the case of missing teen Hailey Dunn.

Dunn disappeared from her Colorado City home more than a year ago.  So far, every other lead has gone cold.

On Tuesday, workers at the Big Spring airport discovered human remains laying in an open field. The man who found the remains declined to speak on camera but did tell reporters he thought the remains belonged to a child.

A source tells KAMC the remains were found inside a trash bag.

O.k., let's break this down a bit. Eyssen begins by discussing Shawn's location and ends with "partly for his own safety, as well". The attorney uses the word "and", which is normally used to link two common ideas/thoughts/subjects or objects/additional points supporting one's case in a debate. Mr. Eyssen was not discussing Shawn's safety, but his physical location at this time. The second part of his sentence is a fragment, an incomplete thought. Why did Eyssen link the two with "and"? Note Eyssen's choice of words "partly for his own safety, as well".  Partly means in part, so there's more than one reason Eyssen is not disclosing where Shawn is. What are the other reasons? Note also he said, "partly for Shawn's safety, as well."  As well as what? Is someone else's safety at risk here?

Moving on to Billie Jean's attorney. I'm chuckling at John Young's fancy footwork as he dances around answering the questions. Notice the qualifiers Mr. Young must use: "There is not a relationship, today."  Notice he does not say Billie Dunn and Shawn Adkins are not together (straightforward denial). For starters, someone should have asked Mr. Young to define "relationship".  He qualifies a specific time, "today".  That does not mean they won't have a relationship tonight, tomorrow, or hereafter. He goes on to say, "Nor has there been one in the recent past."  Someone needed to ask, "How recent is the recent is the recent past? Please define recent for us."  Notice he did not say Billie and Shawn have not been together in the last ____days/the last ___weeks/the past ____months/etc.  He is only willing to commit to "today", this one day. So, did Billie and Shawn decide to knock off for one day because the heat is on? Inquiring minds want to know.

This is too funny! "We have never confirmed..." is not the same as "we have never received confirmation from law enforcement". I bet Shawn and His attorney have never taken it upon themselves to confirm anything from LE. So, Shawn is "accessible" to LE and "informed them where he is and how he could be reached". Notice Eyssen did not say Shawn is cooperating with LE; nor did he say Shawn is taking a new polygraph test or volunteering detailed information on his activities and travels Dec.26-27, 2010.  Shawn is not cooperating, period. He's merely doing what any good defense attorney tells a client...tell LE you are available, where they can find you , and how to reach you, so you don't look like you're running/hiding. There's a vast difference between being "accessible" and being willing to answer/answering any and all of LE's questions honestly. Notice Eyssen didn't say anything about that. Things that make you go Hmmmm. Notice how long Eyssen's last quoted sentence is as he verbally runs down the field, stumbles, fumbles the ball, and scrambles all over the place trying to recover it. I bet he's tired at the end of the day. LOL

Hailey Volunteer Searchers Keep Hope Alive with Memorial

On Thursday, volunteer searchers from across the region gathered in Colorado City to move a longstanding memorial site to an area near the home where Hailey Dunn lived until the day she disappeared in 2010. Included in those volunteers was one family with four generations helping together.

"Billie graciously let us move Hailey's Hope over into the yard wher [Hailey's] home is, and actually, it should be there beacuse that is Hailey's home," said volunteer searcher Terrye Newcomb

To me it seems Billie is on a PR mission.  Her lawyer yacking it up with anyone who will listen that she is NOT in a relationship with Shawn while Shawn's lawyer says they are still a schwing thing  and Shawn answers her cell phone when the media call her. Now all of a sudden Billie lets the memorial be moved to the house.  Why now?  Why was it not OK from the beginning?  Lets not forget Billie could look into the white of the eyes of LE and state Shawn was not in her house when in fact he was hiding in her bedroom.  She is a good liar and has a self preservation agenda IMO.

Where's Hailey's Father? Family Members Give Conflicting Reports

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- KTXS has received conflicting reports from family members as to the whereabouts of Hailey Dunn's father Clint Dunn.

On Thursday the mother of Clint's second daughter and step-sister to Hailey, Naomi told KTXS Clint was working on an off-shore oil rig.

Naomi told KTXS the family relocated to San Antonio where they were waiting for Clint to return sometime next week, and then planned to return to the Big Country to be near the on-going investigation.

KTXS also contacted Clint's mother Connie Jones, who said she no longer speaks to Clint. Nevertheless, she said that a friend of hers told her she had seen Clint driving in Snyder.

The attorney for both Billie Jean Dunn confirmed that she is back in the Colorado City area.

Shawn Adkins' attorney also said his client was in the area and cooperating with law enforcement – although he wouldn't reveal exactly where Adkins was.
