My dogs are on a special urinary diet & can't have any treats. My vet gave me this as a way to make them think they are getting a "cookie"

Take kibble & grind into a flour. Mix with enough water to form a stiff dough. Shape into cookie shapes & bake on a cookie sheet for approximately 1/2 hour @ 350 degrees or until crispy.

If your pet is on a canned precription diet:
Cut a can of food into bite size pieces.
Bake the pieces in the microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes.
This will change the texture of the food but not the nutritional value.

Can do this with food for Dog or Cat

I found this on a website :

Healthy and Cheap Dog Treats

One of my dogs has very bad allergies to many ingredients in commercial dog treats - including beef and grains - so I have come up with these cheap and healthy treats that can be used for dog training or just yummy dog snacks.

Buy one can of turkey Spam and cut the loaf into small cubes. Place the cubes onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and pop into the oven on medium heat.

The treats are done once they are golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside. 0ne can of Spam makes a whole heap of treats that can be kept in the fridge in a freezer bag or jar for weeks.

Another good recipe site for dog treats :

Home made liver treats

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup polenta
1/2 cup wheat germ
1 teaspoon garlic powder
500 grams beef liver
Makes a big batch, but you
can store baked or
unbaked dough in freezer.
Pre-heat oven to 180.
Liquefy liver in blender
Add the dry ingredients. Grease baking tray.
Drop teaspoonfuls of mixture onto tray and
flatten with bottom of glass dipped in water and
polenta. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
Warning—while cooking, the treats will smell
absolutely wonderful to dogs, but the aroma
may not be so appealing to some humans!

I found this recipe on the net years ago, but over the years I have adjusted to my own needs and my dog's taste pallets. Adding to it. I wanted a natural way to control things during flea season.

Here is the original recipe...my recipe is my "secret recipe" lol

 No-Flea Biscuits

 2 cups unbleached flour
 1/2 cup wheat germ
 1/2 cup brewer's yeast
 2 garlic cloves - minced
 3 TBS veg oil
 1 cup chicken stock

Preheat oven to 400, oil 2 baking sheets or 3 depending on size of biscuits.
Combine first 3 ingrediants in a med bowl.
In a LG bowl mix oil and garlic.
Slowly stir in flour mixture and stock alternating into garlic and oil.
Roll out to 1/2" thick on floured surface.
 Bake 20-25 mins or well-browned.
Turn off heat and allow biscuits to dry in oven several hours.
 Store in Fridge or Freezer.

I cut them in seasonal shapes like bats, Xmas trees, even easter eggs lol

All the ingrediants I get for the ones I make I get at the health food store.
When I first got my Chihuahua this was the only treats I  ever had that when I had bought "store bought " treats he wouldn't touch them for awhile. lol.

Obviously there is wheat in this recipe, so be careful with younger pups to make sure there is no reaction.

Oh and a side note..they even smell Yummy to humans, my kids each sampled one and loved it lol, heck everything i make them with IS HUMAN food lol.

Hi Seamonkey - I have a BIL highly allergic to wheat in any form so they use Spelt flour in any baking.  Spelt is an ancient type of wheat but does not cause reactions in people allergic to ordinary wheat.  You have to use less water in recipes.
Should work with doggie treats as well, especially if the dogs have skin allergies.

Here is a yummy cat treat.

Years ago when My TinkyWinky was still alive I made her a similar treat and she loved it, it was the only way she would actually eat fish, some Maine Coast cat she was.. lol. I couldn't find my actual recipe for it but found this similar one on the net.

Tuna Tidbits ( but remember, tuna really isn't that good for your cat so don't over due it)

6 ounce can of tuna

1/4 cup water drained from tuna

3 T cooked egg white, chopped

1/4 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine tuna, egg white and water. Add cornmeal and flour and blend to form a dough. Knead into a ball and roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into one-inch sized pieces. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes. Makes 12 cookies.

Here are a few more from the same place, something to appeal to ALL cat tastes.

Savory Cheese Treats

3/4 cup white flour

3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

5 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

1/4 cup plain yogurt or sour cream

1/4 cup cornmeal

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine cheeses and yogurt. Add flour and cornmeal. Knead dough into a ball and roll to 1/4 inch. Cut into one inch sized pieces and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 25 minutes. Makes 2 dozen.

Chick N'Biscuits

1 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken

1/2 cup chicken broth

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/3 cup cornmeal

1 tablespoon soft margarine

Preheat the over to 350 F. Combine chicken, broth and margarine and blend well.Add flour and cornmeal. Knead dough into a ball and roll to 1/4 inch. Cut into one-inch sized pieces and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Makes 18 cookies.

Crispy Liver Morsels

1/2 cup cooked chicken livers

1/4 cup water

1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

1/4 cup cooked carrot, mashed

1 tablespoon soft margarine

Preheat the oven to 325 F. Place well-done livers in a blender with 1/4 cup water. In a bowl, combine flour and margarine. Add liver mixture and carrots and knead dough into a ball. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut into one-inch sized pieces. Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 325 F for 10 minutes. Makes 12 cookies.

Tibro..my hubby has an allergy to wheat. Would spelt flour work in a regular recipe, such as cookies, etc???
I would LOVE to make some goodies for him that don't taste like wallpaper paste..poor baby!

I used to cook for my dogs all the time..and plan on doing it again.

It is so easy to to.

I look for sales on meats...especially chicken , since it seems to be cheapest during sales. Lamb is ideal, but since I no longer have the sheep farm..it is toooo expensive to feed it!

What I do is put all the chicken in a huge pot and boil it up. NEVER use chicken necks as that is where commercial chicken growers inject the antibiotics.

ONce all tender, I bone it. Save the broth.

I then boil up rice in the broth (oatmeal or any type of cereal grain that your dogs can eat will work)
Put in some garlic and chopped up carrots.  When the rice is done, put the chicken meat in pot, stir it up and , VOILA! You have doggie food.
I then divide it into portions in little baggies and freeze it. Each morning I take out what I am going to use that day and thaw it.
If you only have one or two dogs, you can feed them whatever meat you are having for supper..just buy extra portiions when you shop. They love potatoes and they are good for them and a veggie is fine. Stay away from gassy veggies such as cabbage, beans, brussels sprouts, etc..greenbeans are fine..but CARROTS are the best since they can utilize the Vit. A that is in the carrots.
If you are concerned about vitamins and minerals..PetTabs or any good all round Pet supplement shoud more than make up for this.

BTW, my dogs live to be OLD> 22 years old for a Border Collie is considered VERY old..yet that is how old my old MOlly was when she passed. The others passed younger...one at 19, one at 17 and old Mac had a stroke at 16. SOoooooooo don't ever let anyone tell you that home made food isn't good for your doggies! Laughing

Oh, and my dogs LOVE bananas for treats Laughing

Oh, and I might add...I also use herbal things for particular conditions.

Raspberry leaf tea added to pregnant Moms-to-be and Chamomille tea for dogs recovering from surgery or tummy ailments after grass eating! ONe of my dogs was eating the chamomille blossoms out of my gathering basket soon as I could gather it!!! They LOVE the stuff and it has a very soothing effect on them.
In some circles, it is referred to as "Nature's Penicillin"! Laughing

Yeah and I might add, artcolley raised me on the same stuff as her dogs ( as far as the herbs go and for the same reasons)...only side effect I have had is barking when the moon is full..other than that all is fine..heheheBarkhehehe.

My dogs love bananas too . My chihuahua, Fernando will scale the kitchen table just to raid the fruit bowl for the "nanas" lol. He basically earns it by that point, he is only like a few inches tall, takes him forever sometimes. lol

Thank yapz!

One of my kitties (and therefore all 4  Laughing ) has been on a urinary and stone diet since he was a weenie kitty. Wet and dry. Every now and then he seems to get bored with it. I never thought about baking the wet stuff.

And this food recall has scared the s$it out of me. I've always used a lot of IAMs and Science Diet. Now I'm thinking of making cat food myself.

I used to have yorkies. And one year my little teacup almost died because she came down with unexplained liver failure Shocked  I was constanctly at the vet for nutrition shots, etc. Specialists couldn't figure out anything. I nursed her with an eyedropper and chicken soup for weeks -- and one day at the vet she just snapped out of it! It makes me wonder now about what food I was feeding her.

A year later she died after her dental  Crying or Very sad

Wow, Sharon. I also wonder if it was the food.
I'll bet, truth be known, there have been bouts of this fairly often in the past, just not on so large a scale, and we all never even knew about it.

I shudder at the thought.
