Teen found in suitcase connected to local foster mom

http://www.9news.com/news/article/191609/188/Teen-found-in-suitcase-connected-to-local-foster-mom

 ::snipping::DENVER - The 17-year-old found dead in a suitcase in Ruby Hill Park is the foster son of Jan Churchwell -- a well-known foster mom and a 2004 9Who Care winner.

Our partners at The Denver Post confirmed the deceased teen, Josh Churchwell, is from Burlington and is the son of Jan and Bob Churchwell. Bob Churchwell is a city administrator in Burlington.

For more than 30 years, the Churchwells were foster parents to more than 80 kids. The Churchwells had seven foster kids that they adopted permanently as of 2004, including a boy named Josh.

Joshua Churchwell was found dead by two teenagers wandering around the park on Friday. The teens who found the body live near West Jewel Avenue and South Raritan Streets in South Denver.

Jimmy Love and his friend say they were taking advantage of the beautiful day outside when they found the body.

"We were looking for like metals and scraps to recycle so we could get some extra money," Love said.

When they spotted something unusual in the grass nearby, they went over to take a look.

"My friend Emmanuel said, 'Is that a leg?'" Love said. "It was a suitcase. I lifted the flap and flies came out and at first I didn't believe it but I lifted it up bigger and there was a body."

Police spent Friday afternoon trying to excavate the body, which they said was partially buried in the ground, as well as being in a suitcase.

Joshua Churchwell attended the Ridge View Academy, a school for troubled or at-risk youth about 15 miles east of Denver, the city's KMGH-TV reported.

Police have identified a body found dumped in an empty field in southwest Denver as the 17-year-old son of a city official in Burlington, Colo.

A group of teens on Friday found the body of Joshua Churchwell stuffed inside a partially buried suitcase that was covered with a deflated plastic swimming pool in a vacant lot near Denver's Ruby Hill Park, police said.

An autopsy was performed on Saturday, but a cause of death had not been determined as of Monday morning. There were no obvious signs of trauma on the body, medical officials said.

The boy had been attending the Ridge View Academy, a school for troubled or at-risk children about 15 miles east of Denver, the station reported.

Posting another just in case:

Dead Teen In Suitcase Had Fled Correctional School
Joshua Churchwell Slipped Away From Wrestling Match

 ::snipping2::

The 17-year-old boy whose body was found in a suitcase in a Denver field last week had run away during a wrestling competition at East High School in January, authorities said Wednesday.

Joshua Churchwell of Burlington, had been in custody at Ridge View Youth Services Center, a state-owned, privately operated juvenile correctional program and school in Arapahoe County.
 ::snipping2::
Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said there were no obvious signs of trauma to Churchwell's body, and an initial autopsy did not determine the cause or manner of death. The coroner is awaiting toxicology testing results for drugs and alcohol that could take up to 10 weeks.

Yet, Jackson said, someone put Churchwell's body in that suitcase. So, police are interviewing people and could charge someone, at the least, with abuse of a corpse or failure to report a death, he said. ::snipping2::

ok, color me stupid, but the young man didn't get in that suitcase by accident.  Guess that doesn't always indicate homicide, but still . . .
