Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  It looks like self-styled gambler Joran van der Sloot is running out of cards in his legal battles in Peru.

The hearing Tuesday at Lima's Castro Castro prison didn't go well for the young Dutchman accused of robbing and killing 21 year old college student Stephany Flores.

Although van der Sloot admitted he killed Flores when he was interrogated after his arrest last year, his former lawyer was appealing to get that confession tossed out on the grounds Peruvian police didn't provide a qualified translator.  Van der Sloot participated in Tuesday's hearing in Spanish which undercuts that translator claim.  Of course it's possible his new lawyers could claim he's become more fluent in his 13 months in the notorious prison.

 Now that Van der Sloot has conceded he speaks Spanish, the case can no longer be held up when there is no Dutch interpreter, according to Radio Netherlands journalist Pablo Gámez, who is following the case.

But the translator question may be the least of the challenges van der Sloot faces.

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  Tuesday's hearing in a Lima prison had all the twists and turns we've come to expect from anything involving Joran van der Sloot. He's suddenly capable of participating in Spanish and the local media are chasing rumors of a pregnant girl friend who's been helping ease his time in prison.

Federal prosecutors here in Alabama waiting their turn for a crack at Joran van der Sloot are a step closer.

Van der Sloot was indicted last year on federal charges of wire fraud and extortion stemming from an offer to give information about Natalee Holloway's fate in exchange for $250,000.  The feds say he took the money but offered up bogus information.

But the U.S. charges are stuck in a legal queue awaiting the disposition of charges in Peru where van der Sloot is accused of killing 21 year old Stephany Flores.  And after more than a year, it appears that case is finally heading for trial.

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  What could be more ironic than an accused killer of the daughters of two families finding out he's about to become a dad right before Father's Day?

Joran van der Sloot is a walking contradiction...so is it any surprise he's about to celebrate Father's Day as two families mourn daughters he's accused of killing?

The rumor burning up the internet is that van der Sloot has a pregnant girl friend who has been visiting him in prison. He's been there for more than a year, so you do the math on when and where she got pregnant...if she is, indeed, pregnant.

Peru's largest newspaper, El Commercio has been unable to confirm that the girl friend is pregnant but tabloids and websites are running with the rumor.

The so far unnamed woman reportedly works at the Atlantis Casino in Lima, Peru where van der Sloot met Stephany Flores. He's accused of robbing and killing the 21 year old student.

He's confessed to killing her but claims it was in a fit of rage after she found material relating to Natalee Holloway on his laptop in his hotel room.
