Woman's family wants speedy trial for van der Sloot

(CNN) -- The family of a slain Peruvian woman is urging prosecutors to file their case against murder suspect Joran van der Sloot, warning that he may be released by December unless the case goes ahead.

"We are worried because Peruvian law says that if a suspect's trial doesn't begin within 18 months after his arrest, authorities are obligated to set the suspect free," Ricardo Flores, the dead woman's father, told CNN.

Van der Sloot faces charges in the May 2010 killing of Stephany Flores, who was found dead in his Lima hotel room. Police say van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

Investigators delivered their case file to prosecutors in June for a decision on charges. Ricardo Flores said the prosecutor in the case, Miriam Riveros Castellares, is "not moving with the speed that a case of this magnitude merits."

"We're asking that either the prosecutor file charges or that authorities remove her from this case and name somebody else," he said.

There was no immediate response to the family's concerns from the prosecutor's office.

The public prosecutor has rejected Van der Sloot’s defence that he acted from a ‘violent emotion’. His lawyers had tried to persuade the public prosecutor to charge their client with manslaughter, which in Peru carries a jail sentence of between 6 and 20 years.

The public prosecutor will ask the court to order the Dutch suspect to pay damages to the amount of 200.000 Peruvian soles, about 50,000 euros.

Joran van der Sloot is facing 30 years in prison for the murder of Stephany Flores.  Van der Sloot is best known here in Alabama as the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway on a graduation trip to Aruba.

Van der Sloot met 21 year old Stephany Flores at a casino in Lima.  Hotel security cameras document the two of them going into his hotel room.  Stephany's corpse was found in that hotel room five years to the day of Natalee's disappearance.

Van der Sloot fled to neighboring Chile but was arrested and brought back to Peru where he's spent the last fifteen months awaiting trial. 

He is claiming he killed Flores in a fit of rage after she found material relating to Natalee on his laptop.

Peruvian authorities say the real reason for the killing was robbery and that an examination of the laptop shows Stephany was killed well after the Holloway-related material was accessed.

Stephany's body wasn't found on the fifth anniversary of Natalee's disappearance, she was murdered on the fifth anniversary and left in that hotel room while Joran attempted to escape; her badly decomposing body was found on June 2, 2010.
