Michael Rock has some advice for the politicians who think bringing casino gambling to Hawaii will help solve the state’s financial problems.

Don’t do it.

Rock brings some practical experience to the debate. He ran a casino for two years in Aruba, a Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela that, like Hawaii, relies on tourism to drive its economic engine.

Since July 2009, Rock has been general manager of The Waikiki Edition, a Marriott-managed luxury hotel on the site of what used to be the Ilikai Hotel  ’s Yacht Harbor tower. Before that, he managed a Marriott property in Mexico City.

A 25-year veteran with Marriott, Rock was managing a property in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands some years ago when his bosses asked him to take on a project. They wanted him to become an expert on casino gambling so that he could advise them on whether it fit the company’s mission.

Rock attended classes on the business side of gaming at the University of Nevada in Reno and worked in a casino at a Ritz-Carlton in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He then managed the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino from 2003 to 2005.

What he discovered, and what he told his bosses, is that managing a casino is not all that different from managing a hotel or resort. The key to success is great service. In the case of a casino, it means “celebrating wins” — making winning customers feel good so that they will return.

Eventually, the house is going to win, but gambling involves winning and losing, and it is the winning that needs to be emphasized.

Classic Cars, dancing and fire spitting were the highlight of the evening.

The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino opened its doors in the summer of 1995. The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, began its life as an abandoned, unfinished building by the name of ‘Plantation Bay’. After a thorough renovation, the Resort opened its doors on the 24th of June 1995. The first General Manager Scott Ringer and Mr. Olindo Koolman, the former governor of Aruba attended the special opening ceremony on August 30, 1995. The Resort has 8 floors, 413 Rooms has 6 restaurants all serviced by one kitchen. A free form pool was built, as well as a Pool Bar and Waves / Simply Fish. Lots of palm trees were planted and other landscaping efforts were made to create the garden we have today.

The original 11,000 square feet Stellaris Casino opened on the 4th of July 1995. The Casino was built as an amenity for the guests. In August 2004 Stellaris Casino was renovated and expanded to its current 18,000 square feet. The official opening of the expanded Casino was executed by Minister Edison Briesen, Casino General Manager Michael Rock and the Resort’s General Manager Richard Zeolla. With 32 table games and 500 slot machines it is the largest Casino on the island.

New York lawmakers preparing to introduce 'Caylee's Law'

ALBANY, N.Y., July 18 (Reuters) - Citing the recent acquittal of Casey Anthony, some New York state lawmakers want to make it a felony to fail to report a missing or dead child, but many legal experts say the proposal is unnecessary and could compound family court proceedings.

The proposal, dubbed "Caylee's Law" after Anthony's 2-year-old daughter, who was found dead in 2008 after Anthony failed to report her missing for 31 days, would make it a class E felony to go more than 72 hours without notifying authorities of a missing child and 24 hours without reporting a death. Similar proposals have been announced in at least two dozen other states.

The bill has not yet been formally introduced in New York, but lawmakers who have announced their intention to propose the measure said it would give prosecutors an additional tool in exceptional cases.
