Rochester, N.Y. - Johan Butler says his daughter was his best friend. He cried as he appealed for help finding his 17-year-old daughter.

Larie Butler's mother, Karen Snipes, says it isn't like Larie to go off without telling her parents and not to call them.

Karen says Larie loved her phone and always called when she's was going to be late.

Larie told her mother she was going to Marketplace Mall Saturday and that she loved her. Karen says that was the last time she heard from the teen.

Teen's disappearance called 'suspicious'
School, teachers join hunt for Larie Butler

March 28, 2012

Larie Butler’s mother said she talked to her daughter by phone at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The 17-year-old told her she loved her, and said a friend was going to pick her up to take her to The Marketplace mall.

“That’s the last time I talked to her and that was four days ago and I want my baby back,” said Karen Snipes. “It’s been too long. I don’t know how I am going to keep holding up.”

Police, family and a concerned East High School community continued to search Tuesday for the East High 11th-grader after a Missing Child Alert was issued on her behalf on Monday.

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard on Tuesday called the disappearance “suspicious” and said investigators do not believe Butler is a runaway.
At a news conference late Wednesday morning, Sheppard said the situation is “very serious,” adding that Larie is considered a good student and has no history of running away. A helicopter was up yesterday looking for her.
 ::snipping2::
Snipes said Tuesday that her daughter was picked up by a friend who told her and officers they went to The Marketplace mall and then he “dropped her off by East High School about 6 p.m.”

Sheppard said Wednesday that Larie's phone went inactive Saturday evening, about the time she was dropped off. He said the male who dropped her off has quit cooperating with police but was not considered a person of interest.

Police said Larie lives at 15 Lynchford Park. She is 5 feet tall, about 125 pounds and was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, jeans, gray and pink Nike sneakers and gold earrings.

Person to last see Larie Butler quits helping with search for missing teen
March 28, 2012

The last person to see Larie Butler before her mysterious disappearance on Saturday has stopped cooperating with investigators who continue to search for the 11th-grade East High School student.

Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard said the man, whom he described as an acquaintance of Butler’s, initially told investigators he took Butler to The Marketplace mall about 3:30 p.m. then dropped her off about 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. near East High School.

Police have not found anyone to confirm that story, Sheppard said. He declined to say specifically whether cameras at the mall or around the East High School area were reviewed or provided any information.

Since those initial interviews, the man has declined to cooperate with police, Sheppard said.

utler last talked to her mother, Karen Snipes, by phone about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The 17-year-old told her she loved her, and said a friend was going to pick her up to take her to the mall.

The family reported Butler missing about 5 a.m. Sunday.

Sheppard called the disappearance “suspicious” and “very serious” and said investigators do not believe Butler is a runaway in part because she is a good student, does not have a history of mental health issues and typically keeps her family apprised of her whereabouts by phone.
 ::snipping2::
Regarding the man who said he went with Butler to the mall and school, Snipes said he is a family acquaintance. She learned only after her daughter’s disappearance the pair had been spending time with each other.

Family of Missing Teen Intensifies Search
March 29, 2012

 ::snipping2::
On Wednesday, the Rochester Police Department said that they have no reason to believe Larie is a runaway. They believe that she may be in danger and describe her disappearance as “suspicious”.

Wednesday night Larie’s friends and family continued to search for her by passing out fliers with her picture and description. They went to parts of the city and also to Marketplace Mall. The mall was where she told her mom she was headed before disappeared.

According to police, around 3:30 Saturday, March 24 , Larie told her mom a friend was picking her up and they were going to Marketplace Mall. That was the last time her family heard from her.

The friend Larie said she was going to the mall with was a male acquaintance who has told police that he and Larie did go to the mall but he claims he dropped her off around 7 or 7:30 p.m. near East High School.

On Wednesday, RPD said the man is no longer cooperating with police.

“He’s not answering any questions anymore,” says Johan Butler. “That’s got me hurting inside. I don't know if he knows anything, but please tell somebody. Anybody.  Just say something. Don't have my daughter out here like this with parents worrying where she is.”

Police would not confirm whether or not mall security footage shows Larie at the mall, but just in case, her family and friends passed out fliers to mall-goers in hopes someone was there Saturday and saw her.

Wonder how loosely the term 'acquaintance' is being applied here.  Assuming her parents are not together, could this man be, or have been, a boyfriend of her mothers.

Police Believe Female Body Found Is Missing Teen

Irondequoit, N.Y. - Police say they found a body in an Irondequoit swimming pool that they believe is a missing teenager.

On Thursday, police searched the home of the grandmother of the last person reported to have seen Larie Butler, 17. The body was found in a pool next door to this home.
 ::snipping2::

Rochester and Irondequoit police executed a search warrant at 174 Dorington Rd. Thursday. Police confirmed it was related to the search for Larie Butler missing since Saturday.

Neighbors said the home belongs to an elderly woman. A police source said the woman is the grandmother of the "acquaintance" of Larie who told police he dropped her off in the area of East High School Saturday evening.

Police said they cannot confirm the acquaintance's account and he is no longer cooperating with their investigation.

Larie's mother would not identify the person, but said he is an 18-year-old "family friend."

So not a boyfriend of her mother.

Mother of Rochester teen pleads to find her daughter's killer

WHEC-TV
updated 10 minutes ago

Karen Snipes thinks she knows who is responsible for the death of her youngest child, and only daughter, and she is devastated.

Outside her home Thursday, she pleaded for her daughter's killer to be caught. "You need to turn yourself in, you took away a beautiful girl, a beautiful girl for no reason at all."

It was not the outcome this family expected five days ago when Larie Butler went missing. She was supposed to go to the Marketplace Mall and be home by 7 p.m. Saturday, but she never came home. Snipes says she can't believe it.

"She was going to graduate next year...now I'm not going to get to see my baby walk across that stage because some dude wanted to take my baby's life, for no reason at all," says Snipes.

Police say Larie went to the mall with a male friend. He told police he dropped her off near East High School sometime around 6 p.m. Saturday night. Larie was a junior at East. Her mother says she was a good student, a tutor and dreamed of becoming a nurse.

Police: body in pool believed to be Larie Butler
March 29, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Executing a search warrant at 174 Dorington Road in Irondequoit on Thursday, police discovered a displaced brick that was suspicious, said Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan.

Deputy Rochester Police Chief Mike Wood, who earlier confirmed that police were searching the home in connection with Butler’s disappearance, said there is reason to believe the body is “probably” that of Butler.

Family members said the home on Dorington Road was linked to the last person to see Butler, who they described as an 18-year-old acquaintance.

That acquaintance initially told investigators he took Butler to The Marketplace Mall about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, then dropped her off about 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. near East High School.

Police have not found anyone to confirm that story, Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard said at a news conference earlier this week, and the man has stopped cooperating with the investigation.

Police spent Thursday moving between that house and two on the other side of the street. Neighbors said a woman they described as elderly left the home and was taken away by ambulance after police arrived.
 ::snipping2::
Later Thursday, officers were also parked outside a home on Danforth Street that Butler’s family members said is that of the man’s mother. They knew it was the mother’s home, they said, because it is just a block from their own home.

I believe this article may have been posted before it was announced the body believed to be Larie's was found in the pool.  But the article gives some background.  It's interesting a pool at a vacant house was drained, and then the pool next door was drained.

Police on Dorington Road in Irondequoit investigating missing Rochester teen

Irondequoit, N.Y. —

Rochester and Irondequoit police are on the scene of a home on Dorington Road, near Helendale Road in Irondequoit.

Irondequoit police said that they executed a search warrant today at a home on Dorington Road in connection with the investigation of a missing Rochester teen, 17-year-old Larie Butler, missing since Saturday.

Rochester Police, Irondequoit Police and technicians have been in the area since about 11 a.m. They've mainly been searching the home at 174 Dorington Road. Crime scene tape is up outside the area, and police have been taking bags of evidence from the home.

Deputy Chief Mike Wood with the Rochester Police Department said they are executing a search warrant in connection with the disappearance of Butler.

Neighbors said that earlier in the day, police searched a vacant home across the street. Earlier this week, neighbors said, the fire department drained the pool of the vacant home. Today around 3:30 p.m., officials began draining a pool next to the home where most of the attention has been focused all day.

According to property records, a 68-year-old woman lives at 174 Dorington Road. She was taken away by an ambulance at one point, but was brought back later in the afternoon.

Police investigate discovery of body believed to be missing teen Larie Butler

No arrests have been reported by police after a body was found in a swimming pool in Irondequoit.

News10NBC is waiting for the Medical Examiner’s Office to confirm if it is the body of missing Rochester teen Larie Butler; police believe it is.

Investigators were working into the early morning hours collecting evidence on Dorington Road. where the body was found.

Police arrived at the home around 11:30 a.m. Thursday to execute a search warrant at 174 Dorington Road. That's the home next door to where the body was found.

Neighbors say the woman who lives there is the grandmother of the teen who police believe Larie Butler said she was going to the mall with on Saturday and the last person who saw her. Police say he spoke with investigators but has since refused to cooperate.

Investigators removed bags of evidence out of the home all afternoon. The details of what was found are unknown but police say there was significant evidence of a homicide in the home.

Around 3 p.m., investigators turned their attention turn towards a pool. Video shows police draining the in-ground pool and searching the area. News10NBC is told an investigator noticed a brick missing from the pool cover.

The woman who lived there says she hasn't used the pool in years. By 6 p.m. Thursday, police said they had found the body of a female in the pool.

Murdered Teen's Mother Pleads for Killer’s Capture
March 30, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Earlier Thursday, police executed a search warrant at 174 Dorington Road in Irondequoit. The home belongs to the grandmother of the man who was the last person to see Larie alive.

During that search investigators canvassed the area and found that next door, a brick on top of tarp covering an in-ground pool had been moved. Firefighters then pumped that pool and found a body.

“Obviously the medical examiner’s office has to do their work to make a positive identification, but we do have reason to believe it's probably [Larie Butler],” says Rochester Deputy Police Chief Mike Wood.

Police would not comment on who their suspect is, but Thursday night, no one was in police custody.
 ::snipping2::
One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, told 13WHAM News that he had also suggested to police to look in the pool at the home next door to 174 Dorington. Police had drained another pool on the same street as a part of the investigation earlier in the week. The neighbor said he knew the pool next door to 174 Dorington Road was seldom used or open.
 ::snipping2::
Another neighbor, Susan Kazak, says the people living at 174 Dorington Road are very quiet.
 ::snipping2::
She believes she’s also seen a girl matching Larie’s description around Dorington Road before. The reason she could tell was because of the pink shoes the girl wore.

Larie was last seen in pink sneakers.

“It was a cold day and she had a gray sweatshirt on and her pink sneakers,” Kazak says. “The pink sneakers stood out to me.”

Police have arrested DeVante Lively, the man who was with Larie Butler before she went missing Saturday, in connection with the Rochester teen's death.

Rochester Police Officer Stephen Scott announced the arrest at a news conference today. Lively, 20, turned himself in Friday afternoon and is being charged with second-degree murder.

Police found Butler's body in a swimming pool after executing a search warrant at the Irondequoit home of Lively's grandmother Thursday. The home, 174 Dorington Road in Irondequoit, was the crime scene, Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan said. The cause of death was "trauma to the upper body," Boyan said.

Friend of Larie Butler to be Arraigned on Murder Charge
March 30, 2012

Police confirmed that the body discovered in a swimming pool in Irondequoit is that of 17-year old Larie Butler, who had been missing since last Saturday.
Police said that a male friend of Larie Butler is under arrest. That person, who took Larie to the mall last Saturday, turned himself into police on Friday. He will be arraigned in Irondequoit and charged with second degree murder.

Police identified 20-year-old DeVante Lively as the man they arrested. This comes one day after Larie Butler's body was found in a swimming pool in Irondequoit.

The pool was on property next to Lively's grandmother's home; the same home police believe Lively took Butler Saturday evening and killed her. Police said the cause of death was trauma to the upper body.
 ::snipping2::
Police say Lively is former employee of Rural/Metro Ambulance. He has retained an attorney.

Police they became suspicious when his story that we dropped Larie off near East High School on Saturday night could not be confirmed.

'Why?' hangs over Larie Butler slaying
March 31, 2012

Following Friday’s arrest of DeVante Lively, the 20-year-old charged with second-degree murder in the death of teen Larie Butler, the question Butler’s mother Karen Snipes most wanted answered was simple: “Why?”

“My family is at ease now, but we have more questions,” she said during an emotional news conference, at which Irondequoit and Rochester police announced Lively’s arrest. “I want to know why he did what he did to my daughter.”

It’s a question reverberating through the community, as the shockwaves still spread from the tragic discovery Thursday of Butler’s body in a swimming pool on Dorington Road.

Friend Arraigned in Larie Butler's Murder
By: Casey J. Bortnick
March 30, 2012

The man accused of killing 17-year old Larie Butler has been arraigned in Irondequoit Town Court. Twenty-year old DeVante Lively is facing second degree murder charges. Lively turned himself in Friday, a day after Butler's body was discovered in a pool next to his grandmothers house.
 ::snipping2::

We learned a few details in arraignment. Lively is accused of killing Butler in the basement of his grandmother's home at about 7 p.m. Saturday. That around the time when he told police he dropped her off near East High School after a trip to the Marketplace Mall.

Police say Butler suffered multiple traumas, mostly to the upper body. A weapon was used, but police have yet to recover that weapon.

A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf by the court. Lively was sent to the Monroe County Jail. He cannot post bail.

"He's actually not entitled to bail in local criminal court an A1 felony. It doesn't have much to do with the weight of the evidence; it's just the law. It does not allow the judge to set bail on this kind of a charge," said Kelly Wolford, Assistant District Attorney.
 ::snipping2::
A preliminary hearing was set for April 5th but grand jury proceedings could be completed before that. Lively's attorney, William King, left without speaking to the media.

Lively is a recent graduate East Ridge High School. He's also a former employee of Rural/Metro ambulance.
