Found one from my area that takes only 27 hrs. and 5 mins.  Maybe less if I had picked a different Aussie airport.  I picked Devonport because I liked the name.  Sounded British.

You spend more time boarding and disembarking and waiting in airports than you do actually flying.

OMG that is truth if ever stated!!! I used to go to Oz when I lived in Raleigh N.C. and the trip was like this. 4:00PM departure on a Saturday meant leaving the house at 1:45 then get to airport and check in and wait 2 hours, fly an hour and a half and the layover at Chicago O'Hare for 2 hours, then fly 5 hours to San Francisco and then layover 2 more hours and then fly 14 and a half hours to Sydney. Leave on Saturday afternoon and arrive Monday morning...

Literally from my front door in N.C. to the front door of the hotel in the CBD = 31.5 hours of travel time

    God love yah is all I can say.. geesh!

How true - Montreal to Miami flight - stopover in Atlanta - both ways
Has anyone ever been in the windowless Atlanta airport smoking room?

Heh..heh...frequently!! They are getting better though...new ventilator systems and windows!!!

The best I ever saw was in Narita Airport in Tokyo. Think of an office cubicle with 4' tall walls. The tops of the walls had air jets blowing straight up to funnel and contain the second hand smoke while a ventilator in the roof sucked it all away. The ash tray or trough as it looked was long and stainless steel with water flowing through it. Believe it or not smelled as clean in there than most bars in the states!!

Atlmetroguy knows the drill for bham flights. Actually, it's better on a long trip to just go ahead and drive over to ATL for a flight, probably a cheaper ticket, too, because bham is a secondary airport and not a hub. It is said around here that you can't go anywhere until you go though Atlanta.

Never been through Atlanta.  Miami, Houston, Dallas, Tucson, but never Atlanta.  Sounds like I'm missing something?  Do they have customs and everything there?  Can you come in from international flights there?

But I wouldn't be thrilled about 30 hours in and out of planes & airports.

My longest flight was about 12 hours due to unparalleled stupidity on the part of a particular airline (that I won't name) and the horrors of Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix and Bush Intercontinental in HOU.

Sat on plane at gate in PHX in SUMMER with AC OFF for an hour waiting on runway clearance

Delayed in air

Late to HOU

Missed connection

Had to cross IAH on foot to get new flight- through Memphis

Layover

Long out-of-way flight

More layover

Pilot who can't land on bham runway (too short) so nearly does a touch-and-go and has to get airspeed again and circle around when plane is 20 feet off ground. A wave-off in a commercial airliner is a stressful event. LOL

And of course, drumroll please... lost baggage.

Oh yeah...I fly non stop to Tokyo Japan from Atlanta...13.5 hours flying time though!! Actually you can fly non-stop to any major city in Europe or South America and the Carribean from Atlanta. Only the ATL-TOK flight to Asia.
