Search for missing teen continues

MORGAN HILL, CA (KTVU/FOX) - Volunteers continued searching Thursday for a teenager who went missing in March.
 
A search team looking for Sierra LaMar, 15, went to Lake Cunningham in San Jose, CA, Wednesday hoping to find the girl.
 
The site was picked after people familiar with the man accused of the kidnapping Antolin Garcia-Torres tipped off volunteers that he often went fishing there, sources say.
 
Searches of the area were unsuccessful.
 
LaMar's father urged anyone with information to come forward.
 
"Any kind of information that people might know would be useful for the 'investigation' part, which is separate from our effort," said Steve LaMar.
 
The Poly Klaas Foundation, an organization that assists in the recovery of missing children, continues to offer a limited reward for information leading to the teen's return.

The family of Sierra LaMar has changed the criteria for a $25,000 reward for information about the teen’s disappearance.

The reward is now on the table for anyone who provides information leading to Sierra’s safe return, or to the prosecution of the person or people responsible for her disappearance, according to a press release from the KlaasKids Foundation.

“We have not given up on finding Sierra alive,” said the 15-year-old cheerleader’s father Steve LaMar. “We believe that there are people out there who know something and this is our way of encouraging them to step forward.”

An incident involving a Hispanic male who allegedly attempted to lure a 10-year-old girl into his car July 26, 2011 has drawn recent attention from the community, as some have cited that the sketch released of the suspect looks similar to Antolin Garcia Torres, the murder suspect tied to Sierra LaMar’s disappearance.

The suspect approached a girl outside her home on the 7600 block of Miller Avenue in west Gilroy and ordered her to enter his white Honda. The girl did not comply, but ran into her house and told her family members.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male adult with a goatee with short balding hair or a crew cut.

Some media outlets have connected the sketch of this suspect to Garcia Torres’ booking photo, but Gilroy Police have not identified the suspect yet or announced any possible link to Sierra LaMar.

“Those are other people drawing those conclusions,” Gallacinao said.

The GPD completed their investigation into this incident, and has submitted it to the District Attorney for review.

Sierra LaMar Case: Suspect's Attorney Steps Down Over Conflict of Interest

It appears the suspect accused of kidnapping and murdering 15-year-old Sierra LaMar won't be entering a plea anytime soon. According to press reports, 21-year-old Antolin Garcia-Torres' lawyer dropped him yesterday, citing a conflict of interest issue.

Here's the conflict: Public Defender Ken Mandel's Office is already representing Garcia-Torres' father, Genaro Garcia, who is also sitting in Santa Clara County Jail.

NBC reports that Garcia was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a relative.  He's been charged with 11 counts of lewd and lascivious acts, and three counts of aggravated sexual assault with a minor under 14.

Public Wonders if Gilroy Sketch is Linked to Sierra LaMar

Police said one of the child victims has potentially identified a suspect, but wouldn't say whether that suspect was Antolin Garcia-Torres.

Gilroy police have re-released a sketch of a man with a goatee who they believe "annoyed" three girls and one boy last summer, which is raising questions if the suspect is the man now charged with kidnapping and murdering 15-year-old Sierra LaMar.

According to Gilroy police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao, one of the child victims has potentially identified a suspect. But Gallacinao wouldn't say whether that suspect was Antolin Garcia-Torres, the 21-year-old Morgan Hill man charged with killing Sierra.

Court documents show his father Genaro Garcia Fernandez faces 14 counts of child molestation and sexual assault against a family member. The now adult woman came forward last year and outlined for detectives 10 years of abuse between 1990 and 2000 beginning when she was just 5 years old.

One alleged assault at age 7 or 8 was so vicious the report states, "The pain was so bad that V1 [Victim 1] needed to be carried by other people from place to place."

The report also details threats to keep the child quiet. "As the victim cried, Genaro told her 'not to say anything, or else.' The victim said Genaro had no remorse after the assault."

Johnson thinks the father's case is interesting in light of evidence unfolding against Garcia-Torres.

"Often these defendants in these horrific crimes are defendants who as children have been exposed to that same sort of horrific behavior," said Johnson.

Ironically, father and son were scheduled to be in court just one day apart next month. With the change in attorneys, the timeline has shifted and the accused killer of LaMar is now scheduled to enter a plea on July 31.

I third that!  Who in there right mind allows this to continue for 10 years?  Maybe the child didn't tell who did it because she was too scared?  I do know that old school Latino women are very subservient to their male partners but good grief.  I guess I don't have the full story and I don't know how the child was related to this scum!  No offense to anyone about my comment on subservient women because there are quite a few cultures like that and it can happen for just about any reason.  There is NO excuse for ANY type of ABUSE!  I grew up in a very traditional/old school/southern home and the women were extremely dedicated to their man but I think my Mom broke that habit, lol! This poor little girl.  Kept looking back to see when the reports of the creep bothering the children were, bef/aft Garcia's Dad in jail?

Subservient wife or not, more than one person knew that this child was so hurt that she couldn't walk on her own.  She could have died from those injuries. 

I really wonder what Antolin was exposed to growing up under this man and exactly what has he done has a young man?  Killing Sierra didn't just happen.  He's progressed to this point.  LE really needs to check his background.

I agree with all you said KittyMom!  I do wonder what was done to him as a child or what was he exposed to and no, this isn't his first time at the rodeo!  I think many more victims will be found one way or another!
