What's the deal with Joran sleeping at the school? I didn't know that and it's mighty strange to me.

Seems to me there is even a statement that suggests he was sleeping at school.

IIRC it might be from the assistant head master and not the actual head master.

Seems Joran slept at school multiple times and this was not even viewed as odd. And where was Mr. Delicious' mother when all this gallivanting occurred? That woman never watched her kids for one moment. Doesn't look like Joran was ever home, unless it was to steal money or beat his brother.

A 16-17 yr old sleeping all over the island and no one is even concerned? huh?

Nope, DD loaned me her old clunker, so I am a bit slow here.  It's better than nothing.  Computer guy says I was indeed hacked...is trying to find out what they were looking for.  It all turned out good though, I have had plenty of time to read Beth's book and all I can say is....WOW!  If anyone hasn't read it yet...do so with tissue in hand...you will need it.

Lala ... I hope you did not lose files from your hard drive.  If you did ... I hope you can retrieve them.

I have just finished reading page 32 and ... beginning Chapter ... EVERYBODY KNOWS EVERYBODY.  Beth's words are so powerful and ... I have wiped tears and ... blown my nose frequently in the past couple of hours.   

However ... I did what I said I was not going to do today ... I answered my telephone.  Long story short ... neighbour is on her way over for coffee and ... to introduce me to a new board game she just purchased ... I forget the name.  Oh well ... these 60 year old eyes are in need of a break.

Bill, Charlie, Mitch, and Jeff head to the International School of Aruba and leave the rest of us at the hotel to continue tracking leads. Upon their arrival, they encounter the assistant headmaster, who takes them to the office. As he leads them, they ask if Joran attends this school. "Yes, yes. And he has been sleeping here."...................................................................

3 paragraphs later:

page 83-84:
Then they ask him (headmaster) if Joran is sleeping at the school. He pauses, then answers, "Yes, Joran slept here last night."

Well, I'm not 1/2 through with it, but I'll say this: whenever Paulus became aware of the situation, he took total control of the damage. He was already in charge when Beth arrived at the Sloots. There was no looking for Joran and "discovering" he wasn't home. He came out with cell phone in hand and told them that Joran was at the Wyndham. Actually he said he was at the BACK of the casino in a tournament. Beth almost immediately started asking for those videos along with the Holiday Inn ones. Paulus had business at the Holiday Inn. She spotted him in the lobby the next day.

I just returned from a trip to Aruba. I have been there six times and still love the island.
I was shopping with my family and came across the Internet Cafe. From the front door I look in and see Deepak working behind the counter. I was amazed that he still has a job there. I was standing there for at least five minutes waiting for him to look up at me, but he wouldn’t. There was also a sign hanging at the enterance stating No video, pitcures or media without the written consent of the owner. I find it odd that Deepak wouldn’t even look up at me. I really had to bite my tounge not to call him a murderer. I guess he has such a guilty conscience that he couldn’t even look at me!!!! I sincerely hope that the truth comes out!!!

PS Picked up Beth's book yesterday at Barnes and Noble (20% off list price). Couldn't put it down. Beautifully, beautifully written. keep tissues nearby.

I, Giovanni Chevalier HEYLIGER, agent first class at the Korps Police force Aruba and the Flex-Team, explain the following.

On, Monday June 30, 2005, around 15:15, I heard as witness a man who gave his name as:

John Joseph WARDLAW

born in United Kingdom on 16 February 1956, living at Montana xxxxxxxxxx, employed at the (International School). This statement was taken in English and translated by me, HEYLIGER, to Dutch and sounds as follows:

I can tell you with certainty that Joran was in school Monday, May 30, 2005.  On that day he had helped with moving some school cabinets and folders, because the school is busy with moving to a new building. This may have been done in his free hours, I am not certain of this.  Also I can remember that he had become on sick on two days, and he went towards the medical center, which we have at school. This was on Monday, May 30, 2005 and Tuesday, May 31, 2005 this happened.  I cannot say with certainty how he leaves school or how he came. He certainly would have come by bus because his mother was absent. The only students who can come with their own vehicles to school are those who have a driver’s license. How he leaves I cannot say with certainty because I am inside when the students depart. But there is an attendance record that you can examine. If he had asked to leave it would certainly be mentioned.

This was the last week prior to final examinations and the lessons continued ordinarily.

I read the book straight through yesterday.  Fantastic.  It is a glimpse into the heart and mind of an extraordinary woman thrust into a truly horrendous situation.  Very compelling.

A couple of details I noticed:
1.  Charles called himself a clairvoyant and asked Beth about her sex life.  I'd love to see Greta's unedited version of that interview with him.  I've always considered him odd and wondered what was said that had to be clipped so heavily from that interview.
2.  Paulus was not just sweating profusely but shaking almost uncontrollably during the visit from Beth and Greta.  The book has a very riveting account of this talk.  I was struck by the imagery of Anita taking a white towel, folding it, and wiping up the puddles of sweat from the table where Paulus was seated--just as she has tried to wipe clean Joran's reputation, to no avail.

I also noticed the comment that Joran had been sleeping at the school at night.  This seems so odd.  How did he get into the school after hours?  Did he have a key?

Anita tells us all about Joran and what a good boy he is. How smart he is. I let her go on and on, as this gives me time to listen, look, assess. And as she continues, she begins to share with us what a difficult time they have had with him recently. How he exhibits oppositional defiance and is disrespectful to his mother. How they are beginning to lose control of him as he sneaks out at night and comes and goes as he pleases. After about thirty minutes she concludes by telling us joran is seeing a psychologist for his defiant behavior.
