James Koenig Joins Search for Missing Airman
Volunteers Fan Out Across Anchorage and Mat-Su

May 4, 2012

James Koenig, father of slain 18 year Samantha Koenig, joined the search for missing 24 year old airman Clinton Reeves, Friday.

Koenig, whose daughter was abducted from a midtown coffee stand and killed this past winter, says it’s his way of repaying the community that helped him.

“I’m passing on everything that we have learned and all the connections that we have in town,” he said in front of the gate to JBER, where volunteers gathered to pick up stacks of fliers, Friday.

“There’s no book on how to do this stuff,” he said.

“I think it’s great he’s reaching out to me. I’m a stranger to him,” said Judy Davis, Reeves’ mom, “he’s coming to help me because he knows what I’m feeling so I’m very thankful,”

James Koenig Arrested on Assault, DUI Charges
By Chris Klint
May 15, 2012

ames Koenig, the father of slain barista Samantha Koenig, was arrested early Tuesday morning on charges including assault and DUI after he allegedly left an Anchorage strip club and drove drunk, threatening an employee who tried to stop him.

APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker says Koenig faces charges of third-degree assault -- a felony -- as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving weapons, DUI and refusal to take a breath test.

According to Parker and charging documents (PDF), Koenig and Terry Reeves -- the father of murdered Senior Airman Clinton Reeves -- were leaving the Great Alaska Bush Co. at 631 E. International Airport Rd. at about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday when doorman Robert Amrine noticed that Koenig was intoxicated as he got into a pickup truck with Reeves to drive away, then tried to stop him.

"When Amrine told the man that he would call him a cab, the man said, 'Get back from my door or meet my 1911,'" prosecutors wrote. The number was an apparent reference to the 1911 family of .45-caliber pistols, based on the Colt M1911 but currently made by several manufacturers. "The man then reached into the truck's center console. Amrine was afraid he would be shot and stepped back."
Other Bush Co. employees identified Koenig to Amrine, who informed APD about the confrontation at about 3 a.m. Police then tracked Koenig down at his residence, where he said he and Reeves had been drinking at the Bush Co. He denied threatening Amrine with a weapon and invited officers to search his vehicle, where they found a Ruger 1911-style pistol in the center console.

Koenig’s pickup truck -- a black 2012 Ford F150 XLT Harley-Davidson Edition -- was impounded due to the DUI.

No charges were filed against Terry Reeves, who said Tuesday that he had no comment on the incident.

James Koenig was arraigned Tuesday afternoon and posted $4,000 bail, including $2,000 appearance bond and a $2,000 cash performance bond. The performance bond is meant to ensure Koenig fulfills conditions of release, which bar him from returning to the Bush Co., drinking alcohol or using drugs, or visiting bars or liquor stores while the case is pending.

Marshals use Taser on Keyes after he leaps courtroom rail
Accused killer of Samantha Koenig Disrupts routine proceeding.

By LISA DEMER
Anchorage Daily News
May 24, 2012

During what was supposed to be a routine court hearing Wednesday in a notorious Anchorage murder case, defendant Israel Keyes vaulted over the courtroom railing into the spectator area and was wrestled to the ground by deputy marshals, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. They used a Taser to shock and subdue him.
 ::snipping2::
Just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, three prosecutors and two of Keyes' defense attorneys appeared before U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess in federal Courtroom 1 to discuss setting a trial date. A number of Koenig's family and friends were in the courtroom, as were several news reporters and law enforcement agents.

Jackie Walsh, one of his Seattle-based attorneys, was mid-sentence when chaos broke out, according to an audio recording of the incident.

"Our position is that at this particular juncture we're not --"

People started screaming.

"Get him!" someone yelled. "Get him!"

Deputy marshals directed people in the courtroom to move out of the way.

"Get back!" deputies ordered.

"Kill him!" a woman in the spectator area shouted.

People in the next courtroom could hear a thud. A deputy rushed out to see what was happening.

Within seven seconds, Keyes was subdued, said David Long, supervisory deputy with the Marshals Service in Anchorage. He wasn't in the courtroom but watched a security video of what happened. The marshals won't release the video, he said.

From the audio recording, the clamor quiets down in less than 20 seconds. A woman can be heard sobbing. Another says "I had a feeling he was going to do that."

Keyes wasn't handcuffed during the hearing, which is normal. Somehow, the leg irons that were supposed to restrain him broke -- it's not yet known how that happened, Long said. "We're investigating that right now." The leg irons worked correctly when deputies collected Keyes from the Anchorage jail earlier in the day, the deputy said.

The courthouse section of the Federal Building in Anchorage is under heightened security because of the ongoing Fairbanks militia trial in the courtroom next door.

At Keyes' hearing, no one was sitting in the front row. Long initially said it was cleared for security reasons but later said he couldn't say whether it had been reserved for law enforcement, people had been directed to stay further back, or no one chose to sit up front. More deputies than usual were in the courtroom for the hearing, but marshals won't release details of their security operation, Long said.

"He tried to get over the rail and I think a deputy had a hold of him before he could get out of the well there," Long said. As a deputy tackled him from behind, the momentum may have carried him over the railing into the vacant first row.

"He didn't get far," Long said.

In all, five or six deputies brought Keyes down, Long said. He struggled as they tried to handcuff him, so a deputy used a Taser. No one was injured. He appeared to be heading for the doors out trying to escape, rather than going after someone, Long said.

Deputies cleared the courtroom.

Keyes' defense lawyers declined to comment about the incident, as did Judge Burgess.

Prosecutors said little.
 ::snipping2::
During Wednesday's hearing, assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Russo told the judge prosecutors expected the trial to take a month and they could be ready to go in March 2013. The defense wanted two years to prepare, prosecutors said. Walsh said the defense position was misconstrued, but she didn't have a chance to correct things before the disruption.

While prosecutors turned over voluminous investigative materials to the defense, 90 percent of it related to false leads early in the case, Russo said.

A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made by the U.S. Department of Justice capital case unit. Prosecutors must file a notice of their intent 150 days before the start of a trial, Russo said.

"Everybody here wants their day in court without unreasonable delay, the victims, Mr. Keyes and the government," Russo told Burgess.

The judge rescheduled the trial-setting conference for Friday at 2 p.m.

Alaska barista slaying: In courtroom, suspect makes a run for it
By Kim Murphy
May 24, 2012

SEATTLE -- A courtroom in Anchorage erupted in pandemonium when a suspect charged in the fatal kidnapping of popular barista Samantha Koenig broke out of his restraints and made a dash for freedom before being tasered and wrestled to the ground.

Israel Keyes, a 34-year-old construction worker, was at a hearing in federal court to schedule his trial when he jumped a rail leading to the spectator gallery, according to local news reports. A dramatic audio recording posted by television station KTUU and other TV outlets captured the brief melee before U.S. marshals brought Keyes under control.

Before all the excitement, four guards stood on either side of Keyes during Thursday's hearing. He glanced repeatedly around the courtroom, then made a break for it, the Alaska Dispatch reported. Spectators reportedly shouted and moved to the side, with one yelling, “Kill him!”

Keyes remained largely wordless and, after being zapped by the stun gun, motionless.

Marshals Say Kidnapping Suspect Attempted Escape
By Dan Joling
May 24, 2012

The man charged in the kidnapping and killing of an 18-year-old Anchorage barista attempted to dash out of a federal courtroom Wednesday but was tackled by U.S. marshals before he reached the door.

Israel Keyes, indicted in the death of Samantha Koenig, was grabbed by a U.S. marshal near the defense table and other officers quickly piled on.

"It was over instantly," said Dave Long, supervisory deputy.
 ::snipping2::
He was scheduled for a hearing at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday before U.S. District Court Judge Tim Burgess to set a trial date. The hearing had just begun shortly before 2 p.m. when he took off.

"He broke his leg irons and tried to bolt out of the courtroom, but he was stopped," Long said. "He didn't make it very far."

Leg irons, he said, are like handcuffs around a prisoner's legs. Marshals have not determined how Keyes broke them.

Keyes tried to jump the bar that separates the public from attorney and defendants.

"He tried to," Long said. "One of the deputies grabbed him and I think momentum carried him over."

A marshal used a stun gun to subdue Keyes. The escape attempt ended the hearing, Long said.

In a more subdued hearing, Israel Keyes gets a March trial date
By Ben Anderson
May 25, 2012

Two days after Israel Keyes -- the man accused of kidnapping and killing 18-year-old Anchorage barista Samantha Koenig on Feb. 1 -- vaulted over the railing in a federal courtroom and had to be subdued by a team of U.S. marshals, a hearing on Friday saw Keyes get a trial date in 10 months.
 ::snipping2::
Keyes somehow managed to break his leg irons, which the U.S. Marshals Service described as being made of steel chain.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess addressed Keyes's outburst in court on Friday, warning him that similar behavior would merit additional security (including additional shackles and, potentially, a gag), contempt of court charges, or even see him relegated to a jail cell, from where he would have to watch the proceedings against him.

Already, Keyes wore additional restraints and was surrounded by security. He wore a red jumpsuit used to indicate a problem inmate. Asked by Burgess if he understood, Keyes replied, "Yes, your honor."

Burgess also chastised spectators for the outbursts two days ago. Acknowledging that he couldn't be sure which onlookers had also been present Wednesday, Burgess said, "Although Mr. Keyes's behavior was inappropriate, some of the comments were equally inappropriate."

Further outbursts could lead to spectators being removed, he said.

Following Burgess's statements, assistant U.S. attorney Frank Russo got up to clarify statements he made on Wednesday. The government was seeking a trial timeline of around 10 months, much shorter than defense proposed.
 ::snipping2::
Then Burgess turned to Keyes and, for the first time in his several court appearances, Keyes spoke more than a few words.

"The only concerns I have are regarding to the discovery (evidence), which I have not had the chance to see for myself," Keyes said. He added that he was trusting the attorneys to set a trial date -- but once one was set, he preferred that it wouldn't "move around." He said he would be OK with an earlier trial date, too.

"If 10 months is realistic, that's fine with me," Keyes said, and that even earlier would also be fine.

Due to the complexity of the case, and the possibility of the death penalty being pursued, Burgess declined to move the trial date up but did grant the government's request for a 10-month timeline. Jury trial should start March 11, 2013.

The court -- including a large contingent of Samantha Koenig's friends and family -- stood as Burgess left, then waited for Keyes to be escorted out. Wrapped around his waist was a belly chain, with his handcuffs attached. He was again in leg shackles, and numerous marshals stood around the courtroom, with others seated. David Long, supervisory deputy with the U.S. Marshals Service said that security had been "beefed up" for Friday's hearing.

Keyes' Houdini-Like Move Under Investigation
Defendant's leg irons mysteriously broken

By Bill McAllister
May 24, 2012

 ::snipping2::
Although Keyes was not handcuffed, he was supposed to have a tough set of leg irons on. How he got out of them remains a mystery.

"I’ve done this 20 years, I’ve never seen anybody pull that loose like that, no,” said David Long of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Long says he does not believe that Keyes could have broken the chain on the leg irons simply through brute strength.

But how else could he have done it?

"Yesterday’s incident is under investigation, so we can't really talk about the specifics of that incident."

It will be up to Judge Timothy Burgess to decide how Keyes will be restrained from now on.

"Right now we generally have everyone in leg irons, but it just depends on the judge, it depends on the case," Long said.

KTVA asked: "And typically you don't have them cuffed at the defense table?"

"Not in front of the judge or the jury, no," Long said.

So whenever this would get to trial, than that becomes an issue.

"It becomes an issue,” he agreed. "And it'll be for the judge to decide how we proceed."

It will be a matter of locks and Keyes

They need to put one of those taser belts on him.  The next time he decides to act out (and you know there'll be a next time), zap his arse and watch him twitch.

I don't think they're going to trust Israel Keyes anymore.  That was a real stupid stunt he pulled imo.  Just what did he think he was doing?  Maybe he's going to try for an insanity defense?!!

Keyes returns to court 2 days after apparent escape attempt
Restraints added in wake of Wednesday's escape attempt.

By CASEY GROVE
Anchorage Daily News
May 26, 2012

Wearing a new red jumpsuit and now labeled a dangerous prisoner after an apparent escape attempt, Israel Keyes, the man charged with abducting and killing 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, sat calmly through a federal court hearing Friday.
Three U.S. marshals walked Keyes in and chained his handcuffs and leg shackles to the floor -- added precautions after his vault into the gallery of a different courtroom Wednesday.

On Friday, Keyes stared into the gallery as Koenig's parents entered the courtroom separately, each with their own supporters, while three marshals stood around him.

The Wednesday hearing had been set to discuss a trial date and whether the case should be officially deemed "complex" because of the nature of the crime and the possible sentence of death. It was disrupted when Keyes, 34, somehow slipped out of or broke his leg shackles and jumped over a courtroom railing. Audio of the cut-short hearing includes a woman yelling, "Kill him!" as U.S. marshals shocked Keyes into submission. That proceeding lasted 11 minutes, according to court records.

Authorities say Keyes forced Koenig, who'd been a barista for a little more than a month, out of a Midtown coffee hut where she worked the night of Feb. 1. Keyes stole a bank card, killed Koenig a short time later and went on to withdraw cash using the card at ATMs in Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, according to charging documents.

On Friday, Judge Timothy Burgess picked up where matters had left off two days earlier. The judge first warned Keyes and spectators in the court against any further outbursts.

"It's important for everyone to understand what happened cannot happen and will not be tolerated," Burgess said.

The judge warned Keyes he might end up with more shackles or a gag or be placed in a jail cell for future court proceedings. Burgess asked if Keyes understood.
 ::snipping2::
Burgess said there had been "unfortunate reactions" and statements made in the courtroom. The comments were just as inappropriate as Keyes' behavior, the judge said.

Then the judge, federal prosecutors and Keyes' attorney got down to the business of setting a trial date, settling on March 11, 2013.
 ::snipping2::
Outside the courtroom, David Long, supervisory deputy for the Marshals Service, explained the added restraints for Keyes. Long would not say exactly how many more marshals were in court Friday.

Long said Judge Burgess had earlier ordered the hearing to be held in a different courtroom, possibly to put Keyes farther from the gallery and public exits. The red jumpsuit Keyes wore signifies that corrections officers at the Anchorage Jail have decided Keyes is a dangerous prisoner, Long said. "He graduated himself up to the red category."

Long said he had no idea what set Keyes off on Wednesday.

Samantha Koenig's Guitar Given Away in Mendeltna
By Rhonda McBride
May 28, 2012

Mendeltna, Alaska — Samantha Koenig was remembered this Memorial Day weekend for something other than her kidnapping and death this past winter.  One of the Anchorage barista’s guitars was given away at the Mendeltna Creek Music Festival near Glennallen.

Darcy Hill, a Koenig family friend, says Samantha’s father, James, donated one of his daughter’s guitars.

“I think he wants the music of Samantha to continue to live on, as she does in all our hearts,” says Hill.  “He really wanted somebody young, who has a promising future ahead of herself.”

From the sound of it, a 14 year old Anchorage girl fit that description. Destany Hawley, who sings and plays guitar as well as the piano, was the opening act at the festival on Friday night.

On Saturday, festival organizers called her back to the stage to present her with Samantha’s guitar, an acoustic instrument, with three tiny letters pressed into the grain of a black case:  “SAM.”

Samantha also had an electric guitar and a flute, that Hill says her father would also like to give away to the right young person.

As for the acoustic guitar, festival organizers felt it was Destany’s destiny to take this instrument home.

“She kind of reminded me of Samantha in a way, as far as her energy, her happiness, her excitement and her love of music,” said Kari Bailey, who schedules the entertainment for the weekend -- and prides herself on making sure talented young people are showcased at the festival.

The man charged with the kidnapping and murder of a coffee stand barista is the prime suspect in a double homicide in Essex, Vermont.

Israel Keyes, 34, is awaiting trial in the kidnapping and slaying of 18 year old Samantha Koenig, news reports out of Vermont tie him to the murder of a couple whose bodies have not yet been found.

Keyes told officials where they could find the bodies of the missing couple while being interrogated about the dissappearance of Koenig.
 ::snipping2::
Authorities say they have enough evidence to believe Bill and Lorraine Currier were abducted from their home in early June and murdered. Their bodies have not been found. According to WCAX-TV, a local t.v. station in Vermont, authorities found the couple's garage window broken, and a .38 caliber handgun was missing and the phone line had been cut.

WCAX News says it has confirmed Keyes was staying in Essex at the exact the time the couple went missing. And he checked out of his hotel the day after they disappeared.

Keyes has not been charged with the murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier, but charges are expected

Israel Keyes Investigated for Possible Lower 48 Murders
Alleged murderer of Samantha Koenig, Keyes, brings up questions in Lower 48

Story Created July 31, 2012, Updated August 1, 2012

ANCHORAGE - Six months after 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was kidnapped and murdered, authorities are investigating to see if her accused killer, Israel Keyes, could be connected to other cases on the East Coast.

Two weeks ago a Vermont television station, WCAX, reported Keyes might be connected to the disappearance and murder of a couple there.

WCAX reported on June 8, 2011 Keyes checked into a hotel in Essex, Vermont – the same day Bill and Lorraine Currier went missing. Keyes checked out the following day.
Investigators have not yet named a suspect, but gave a few details at a press conference. “The person believed to have committed the murders is in custody in another state and will stay in custody,” said Tristam Coffin, U.S. Attorney for Vermont.

On July 25, 11-year-old Celina Cass went missing from her home in West Stewartstown, New Hampshire. Her body was found in the Connecticut River not far from the Canadian border.

WCAX confirmed Israel Keyes owns a cabin in Constable, New York, which is on the Canadian border. It’s also a four-hour drive from West Stewartstown and an hour and a half from Essex.

Over the weekend the New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General, Jane Young, publicly acknowledged for the first time that investigators were gathering information about Keyes.

Suspected serial killer owns cabin in Constable
August 4, 2012

An Anchorage man who owns property in Constable in Franklin County is jailed in Alaska on charges that he murdered an 18-year-old woman and extorted a ransom from her family. But he is not just an accused murderer; some, including law enforcement, believe he could be a serial killer.
Israel Keyes, 34, was arrested in March in Texas, extradited to Alaska and subsequently charged with the Feb. 1 murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, who worked as a barista in Anchorage at the time of her death. Alaska-based NBC affiliate KTUU reported April 2 that her body was discovered in a lake near Anchorage that same day.
Keyes is also a suspect in a double homicide in Vermont in 2011, and could be under the microscope for another 2011 murder in New Hampshire.
Franklin County District Attorney Derek P. Champagne said he had never heard of Keyes and does not believe there are unsolved murders in the county to which Keyes could be linked.
“Our office has had no contact with him and neither has state police,” Mr. Champagne said Thursday.
Jefferson County District Attorney Cindy F. Intschert said she is looking into the question of whether her office or area law enforcement has any information or suspicions about Keyes.

A Facebook page, “Have You Ever Met Israel Keyes? Possible Serial Killer,” is tracking the investigation. The page administrators include Ms. Koenig’s father, James Koenig of Anchorage, and Peggy Giles, of Valdez, Alaska. She said Keyes was raised in an Amish family and was one of nine siblings, but Alaska-based CBS affiliate KVTA reported March 19 that one of Keyes’s childhood baby sitters, who was not named, said he was raised in a Mormon family.
They said they have done research on Keyes and passed their findings on to the FBI.
“We’re trying to get a timeline together ... and match his whereabouts up with other missing persons,” Mr. Koenig said. The Facebook group said Keyes may be responsible for a slew of killings, possibly going back to 1996.

Although Keyes has been charged only with the Koenig murder, Burlington, Vt.-based WCAX reported July 23 that he is the prime suspect in the 2011 double murder of Bill and Lorraine Currier. The station additionally reported that Keyes was staying in Essex, Vt., the town where the Curriers lived and were slain.
The Union Leader newspaper from Manchester, N.H., reported July 28 that the FBI and state authorities in Alaska were sharing information about Keyes with New Hampshire prosecutors, possibly in connection with the July 25, 2011, slaying of 11-year-old Celina Cass of Stewartstown, N.H., which took place a month after the Currier murders.
“State police are aware of Mr. Keyes and they are being provided information through the FBI. Everybody is looked at in these cases,” New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Jane Young told the Union Leader last week.
