NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - There are indications New Haven police are near an arrest in the death of Yale University graduate student Annie Le of Placerville. The coroner is releasing autopsy results this afternoon (12 p.m.). Her body was found stuffed in a wall at a lab where she worked. Officer Joe Avery denies media reports that a possible suspect failed a polygraph test and has defensive wounds on his body.

I've been wondering if the killer perhaps followed Annie into the bathroom, somewhere that people wouldn't walk into and see what he was doing? It just seems so strange if he didn't, to take a chance of people walking in. imo
Or it could have been an employee that had access to a workroom or supply room where no one else would be? The fact she was in the chase wall area bothers me - had to be someone that knew the details of the building.
That also, somewhere the killer felt that someone wouldn't walk in on them.

catching up on this thread....does anyone think that the person who did this to Annie was trying to get her to not go through with her marriage as he wanted her for himself...when she refused to stop her marriage, it got physical? someone who was obsessed with her and it was getting right down to the minute of her wedding? desperate obsessed sicko? sorry if this has been asked/questioned before...
That is what I think, someone with a sick obsession for Annie.

Certain microscopes used in research are also located in the basements, in individual rooms since they require darkness.

I agree NoRose! Very confusing.

Cops "hope" an arrest is imminent in the Annie Le's murder investigation, they said Tuesday morning - as medical examiners prepare to disclose how she was killed.
New Haven police want to throw the cuffs on a lab technician who they believe killed the Yale graduate student by 1 p.m., said police spokesman Joe Avery.
The tech, who the New Haven Register reports is involved in animal testing in Le's lab, failed lie detector tests and has scratches on his chest that suggest he was involved in a struggle.
Cops and FBI agents have interviewed the suspect several times until he stopped answering questions and asked for a lawyer, the Register said.

BODY IS IDENTIFIED; CAMPUS MOURNS
After the speeches and the prayers, Cross Campus fell silent, the faces of over 2,000 people illuminated by burning candles. Then out of nowhere a hum began. It grew until it became a tune: “Amazing Grace.” Once that faded, the sound of a lone violin came out of Berkeley College, playing the same song.
Students, faculty members and staff from around Yale gathered on Cross Campus on Monday night to honor the memory of Annie Le MED ’13 in a candlelight vigil arranged by undergraduate organizations, cultural houses and Yale administrators. The vigil came after a day of mourning within the Yale community.

Over the past few days we have heard
- Bloody clothing . no bloody clothing found - one day later it was confirmed that bloody clothing was found
-Body /no body found - one day later is was confirmed that her body was found.
With the agencies involved IMO one is talking to the media and another is trying to hold it close to their chests until they have no choice but to confirm the information. I think Yale is putting a lot of pressure on the local police to play it down.
I am betting they have a suspect, they are close to an arrest if it has not already occurred, and we will hear about the arrest of the lab tech when they do a press conference about the autopsy today.

Annie Le suspect Lab Technician she worked with
A lab tech that worked in the same lab with Annie Le, is emerging as a suspect in her murder. ABC News reported that the lab tech failed the polygraph test on Saturday, and has scratches on his chest. USA Today reported that the lab tech (who is involved in animal testing) stopped the polygraph test in the middle and invoked his right to an attorney before he answered any more questions. The police found Annie Le's body in a wall on Sunday in the basement of the building she entered last Tuesday.
The local police have denied that they have a suspect, but did state that no other students were involved and that no one else is in danger. Because a key card is needed to access the building and the lab in the basement, there are only a handful of people who had access.
Officials are expected to release the cause of Annie Le’s death after 3 pm today, the Associated Press reported.

City, Yale Learned From Jovin In Annie Le Case
Every Monday, “cold case” investigators gather to reexamine Suzanne Jovin’s unsolved 1998 murder and the paltry, mishandled evidence.
Meanwhile, a week after Annie Le was murdered, cops have closed in on a suspect while they await lab results on bloody clothing found at the scene.
Both gruesome murders involved Yale students. Both shocked the city. Both brought the national press streaming into town. Rick Levin presided over Yale then and now; his university secretary, Linda Lorimer, oversaw the crisis response. The city’s mayor, then as now, was John DeStefano; the top state prosecutor on the case, Mike Dearington.
The similarities end there.
The specter of the botched Jovin case has haunted the Annie Le case from the start — and, observe those familiar with the crisis and police responses, New Haven and Yale learned important lessons.
The biggest difference has been in the law enforcement reaction

Yale student's autopsy results expected
Police are analyzing "large amount" of evidence
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - The mystery of Yale graduate student Annie Le's killing is expected to become clearer this afternoon.
The state medical examiner's office says it will be releasing the cause of her death after 3 p.m. The 24-year-old from Placerville, California, went missing a week ago and her body was found Sunday in a wall of a university laboratory building.
Police appear to be close to an arrest, but they're not confirming anything. Authorities have denied several media reports that police interviewed a possible suspect who failed a lie detector test and had defensive wounds on his body.
Police say the killing was not a random act and no students are believed to be involved. The New Haven Register reports that the suspect is a lab technician.
The medical examiner ruled Le's death a homicide yesterday, but declined to say how she died because of the pending police investigation.
Police are analyzing what they call "a large amount" of physical evidence, but have not gone into detail.
Hundreds of people gathered at a candlelight vigil on campus last night to remember Le.

Who has access to a graduate lab that is not a student?:
Visiting researchers
Professors
Custodial staff
Clerical staff
Lab techs (usually university staff)
Medical / Lab equipment and chemical sales people (wanting to sell you the latest greatest equipment that you only dream of using but the university can not afford while they are helping you order your pipettes, beakers, etc. )

And no suspects’ names were floated. It turned out the cops have a “strong” suspect, a lab tech who worked in the same building as Annie Le and reportedly failed a lie detector test when interviewed about the incident. As word leaked out about the suspect, police declined to confirm it, or float his name. (The suspect retained a lawyer. He’s no longer working at Yale. The state’s judicial website shows only one previous case involving the suspect, who was born in 1985; he was nabbed for “traveling unreasonably fast.”)

And more conflicting reports:
Reports say suspect in custody in murder of Yale student Annie Le
by The Associated Press
Tuesday September 15, 2009, 12:22 PM
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Police have a suspect in the slaying of a Yale graduate student whose body was found inside the basement wall of a university research building, the report .
But Officer Joe Avery said that contrary to published reports, police do not expect to make an arrest today in the death of 24-year-old Annie Le. He would not comment further.
Reports say Yale student suspect in custody, but New Haven police say no arrest imminent
(snipped)

(Wasn't Officer Joe Avery quoted as saying the opposite in another article?)

Northern Rose, I doubt that clerical staff would have access to the lab area. This is an area where it is said the small animals were kept where they were conducting various lab studies. any notes, or documentation would be taken to a clerical staff to handle outside of the working lab area.
