Steve Cohen, special advisor to Aruba, came on the show hoping for a chance to talk to Beth about where the investigation stands today. Dr. Phil turns to Steve. "So, you're a paid consultant?" he asks.

"That's correct," Steve replies.

"And, who pays you?" Dr. Phil probes.

"I'm actually paid by the tourism industry, which is the Aruban Tourism Authority, and also a group called AHACA, which is an association of hotel owners on the island."

I guess Aruba was trying to distance themselves from Cohen.

ATA reacts on statement by Steve Cohen In Dr. Phil’s program

Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) wishes to clarify the following:

- Steve Cohen is not paid and has not been retained by ATA but by AHATA (Aruba Hotel &
Tourism Association);
- The Task Force supported Steve Cohen to be the spokes person for Aruba in only the
Natalee Holloway case. The Task Force and ATA have compiled the document “Natalee
Holloway Talking Points” to serve as a guide for everybody who talks to international media on
the subject;
- ATA and Minister Briesen are not in agreement with Steve Cohen’s statement where he gives
details on the case and says that the 3 suspects are guilty. This statement bu Cohen was not
discussed in the Task Force. A press conference was called last week in Puerto Rico, during CHA
(Caribbean Hotel Association) Marketplace, where ATA and Minister Briesen were surprised
by the same statement by Cohen. Immediately Minister Briesen and ATA Director Jansen
approached messrs. Cohen and Pesquera to emphasize that Cohen cannot make such statement
on behalf of the Government and/or Aruba. Specifically, Cohen was informed by Minister
Briesen and ATA Direct or Jansen that he cannot give details of the case and cannot speculate
on the guilt of the 3 suspects;
- However, a number of days before the Puerto Rico Conference Cohen had already participated
in the recording of Dr. Phil’s program, of which ATA had not knowledge, and unfortunately he
made the same statements in that show;
- Deviation of the contents of the above mentioned document on “Talking Points” was
not discussed in the Task Force. ATA maintains the strategic philosophy that Aruba must be
defended with the truth, facts and correct information.

It must be added that Cohen’s position, as any other spokes person in the passed ot in the
future, has many challenges. Cohen’s position as defender of Aruba is not a popular one at
the moment and we appreciate his willingness to do it. His presence at CHA had a positive
influence with the travel tour operators there.
Based on the recent developments ATA and Minister Briesen are doing some re-evaluations
to discussed internally.

Thanks San, so it was the Aruba government through Briesen who put a muzzle on Cohen. So Tourism Minister Briesen did not want the truth to come out, is that it? It is doubtful Cohen just pulled that information out of nowhere. That is his area of expertise, what he was hired to do, to present information to the public.

SAD STORY. I was away for less than a week on a mini vacation in California & Miami, and while away from my island I was glued to Fox News & CNN attempting to make sense of the Natahlee Holloway tragedy. So sad. The story is atypical to Aruba. Fact, I have been living here for almost three decades and nothing like this ever happens here. We’ve wined and dined 4.5 million visitors over the past 10 years - the same number of visitors that came returned to their homes, plus tan and a few pounds overweight. Yet I know that difficult-to-explain disappearance stories are commonplace in big metropolitan areas – according to my Police sources 12 people are missing from Alabama alone, their whereabouts a mystery. Naturally the question comes to mind why doesn’t the press want to pick up that lead. Alabama, Aruba. What sounds more alluring, you judge. So sad. I am a mother and I went through turbulent teenage years with my son who matured since then to become a wonderful adult. He was a handful as a teen. Thank god kids grow and usually survive their learning experiences, unscratched. Anyway, as a member of the press, I pride myself of staying out of this story. I have no take. I have no clue as to what happened and I am unwilling to speculate. What I do know, to quote the commissionaire in charge of the investigation, that when you flash a spotlight on this island, islanders all want to stand under the light. That is the nature of a small, sleepy community where nothing exciting ever happens. So, when it finally does, every radio announcer and every press photographer instantly becomes a ‘leading investigator.’ Please count me out. I am grieving for our lost serenity and for the loss of my core belief that Aruba has a Teflon coating as far as safety and security. Watching the predatory type of fabricated gruel produced by the likes of Nancy Grace on CNN, I long to see Christiane Amanpour or Paula Zahn on the small screen. I realize that in the Grace-less case there is a mean streak: You think you are so special, and peaceful, and extraordinarily color blind and racial tension free, let me prove the opposite. You are just like us, nothing special, just quagmired in conflict and riddled with 21 century issues. Basically, CNN is a terrible disappointment to us country-bumpkins who used to believe in the network’s integrity, objectivity and fairness. OK, a bit left-oriented, and liberal, naturally, but other than that we thought it was above reproach. How foolish. They are there to just make a buck, score ratings. Friday, I met Bob DiLella, of Sherwood News, in Aruba, a spin doctor here to help us sort things out. It is parially your fault, he said. When reporters asked you about crime statistics and other serious matters you answered: look at the ocean how blue, and the weather so nice! Issues have to be dealt with, a responsible spokesperson must assume center stage for the purpose of communicating well-packaged information, you must be honest and forthcoming, not just appalled, outraged and confused. He is right, that’s how I feel appalled, outraged and confused, thus useless in the investigation, which I believe is in good hand with Commissionaire Van Statten and prosecutor Janssen. Bottom line: How did this story get so big. While no one is talking about it as a gossip columnist I can report that President Bush, classical pianist Condolisa Rice and the Governor of Alabama all called our prime minister, Nelson Oduber, urging him to cooperate with the FBI. Of course he would, he wants this thing over as much as you and me. So how did this story become so big. Money as translated into political clout. Whose money, whose clout. Young Natalee’s father, most probably, he must be doing something important for Uncle Sam otherwise forget about it, the story would not have ballooned the way it did. Admittedly, it was a slow news week and Michael Jackson’s jury deliberated to no end, thus the army of press reporters picked up a story which sounded interesting, speckled with lovely promising elements coconut trees, slave trade, the cocaine cartel, yummy. It’s all BS. This is not a big story. It is small and terribly banal. It could have happened anywhere in the globe, in its center a teenager on vacation, having fun, letting her hair down and her guard. Making some bad judgment calls which got her in harm’s way. Did I already tell you how saddened I am for her, her family and the island which is being racked over the coals by a predatory media. They don’t get it, they don’t know it is our livelihood, our bread and butter. Airing their fiction from under artificial eye lashes they cannot perceive the damage that they might potentially be doing to our economy and to our future. This island is being victimized by the press from Geraldo to Good Morning America. Who will come to our rescue? Our repeat guests. I am confident that those good folks who have been vacationing here for years, will speak up on our behalf in their communities. And I promise from my chair, in front of my word processor to continue to do what I do – write entertaining articles for the paper - and I know that Aruba is committed to continue to do what it does best - providing a safe & fun famed tourist product. We will continue to do what we do and hope that our higher powers will sort the evidence out, shortly. Don’t cancel Carnival the coming weekend, don’t cancel the Dera Gai celebrations. It is heroic to go on living, to go with the flow and survive devastating lows. From Aruba’s perspective perhaps all publicity is good publicity since is raises the level of name recognition. That’s sort off my only consolation.

Do you think a pro like Cohen would go on air and deliberately lie in such way that it allows him to get caught, and then smacked down in public?  The way he was humiliated after joran returned to Holland after Christmas break and Cohen assured all that he would be questioned during his stay on Aruba?

Likewise, do you think it possible that someone who mattered did not green light Cohen's comments on Dr Phil, where he stated --  outright -- that the boys had sex w/ Natalee and there was "guilt".

I think Steve Cohen is a contemptible lowlife.  And a man of dubious conscience.  But I think he's a pro, at the media game.

And I always thought he got lied to or double-crossed, that he was set up to look a fool.
