11:30am Update on Search For Somer
By
Rich Jones, News Director
@ October 20, 2009 12:00 PM Permalink | Comments (0)

Update on the search for Somer Thompson from an 11:30am news conference by Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler:

Scores and scores of officers are involved in the search for Somer.  They've expanded the alert by a few miles, and they're also interviewing more known sex offenders in the area.

He says good leads are coming in, they're getting hundreds. The number is 877-227-6911.

A statewide Amber Alert went out mid-morning.  Beseler says it's based on Somer's age and the circumstances surrounding the case.

They still don't believe she was abducted but they believe it reaches the criteria.

Beseler says they're still following up on the attempted abduction of a 5 year-old girl in Orange Park 10 year-old, but he's quick to point out that they don't believe the two are connected.

This is the first people are hearing about the attempted abduction of the 5 year-old.  Beseler couldn't say why it's only now being reported.

April Boothroyd, whose daughter was approached by some suspicious people, says she's thankful that her daughter is home safe.

Her daughter is in Kindergarten.  She told her mom that the people in the car asked her to get into the car.

Shannon Pallock, who witnessed the attempted abduction, says she was concerned for the 5 year-old.

She didn't get a great look at the people in the car.

Tip Line:  877-227-6911 or email: cart@claysheriff.com

Beseler says they don't want to get sidetracked.  One time a year ago where Somer went to a neighbor's house and was back home safely.  Beseler says it's not relevant to this.

How to Help in the Search for Somer Thompson
Ann Butler     Created: 10/20/2009 11:26:39 AM    Updated: 10/20/2009 1:31:39 PM

SOMER RENEE THOMPSON
Case Type: Endangered missing
DOB: Apr 5, 2002 Sex: Female
Missing Date: Oct 19, 2009 Race: White
Age: 7 Height: 3'5" (104 cm)
Missing City: ORANGE PARK Weight: 65 lbs (29 kg)
Missing State : FL Hair Color: Brown
Missing Country: U.S. Eye Color: Brown
Case Number: NCMC1133666

Circumstances: Somer was last seen walking near her school on the afternoon of Oct. 19. She was last seen with her hair in a ponytail tied with a red bow, wearing a maroon sweatsuit with a pink stripe, and a black tee shirt. She was carrying a purple Hannah Montana backpack and lunchbox.

TO HELP: Go to the Orange Park Athletic Association, 1086 Fromhart St.

Officials need help handing out flyers and going door-to-door in neighborhoods to ask if anyone has seen Somer. Police also need people who can xerox or reprint flyers as they run out. If you can, assist them, go to the athletic association.

Right now, civilians are not allowed to help search wooded areas because police personnel and canines are in the area.

They do not want any evidence that may be there to be tampered with or contaminated.

TO GIVE POLICE INFORMATION: Call 911, or call 1-877-227-6911 or 1-866-845-TIPS. You also can email cart@claysheriff.com.

At first I had hoped Somer was at someone's house and that person was too ignorant to call the LE and inform them, but now too many hours have gone by and it's not looking good.

I just watched the clip on HLN about Somer was that her mother that was standing by the officer? She looked fairly young and had blondish wavy hair?

Thats the same thing they said about Sandra, that they are not treating it as an abduction... i think until they know what happened and they "arent ruling anything out" that seems as though they are ruling it out.....

Yeah my little boy is a bit small. I was just thinking 27 pounds was a big difference,I was wrong. I guess.  I hope and pray that she is found soon I am so upset everytime I turn around another child is gone! It makes over protective parents like me. So much worse. I sometimes think that I am going to loose my mind I am always scared. If my boys r outside I am at that window every 3 to 4 minutes to check on them. If I don't see them I go straight out the door. And holler untill I get an answer. I don't let them go nowhere at all. And if I go they go. I swear sometimes I really think I am loseing it. And scared I am going to hurt my kids by the way I am. In the long run. So do I need help. Like do I need to go talk to someone?I freak out of just the thoughts of me not finding them after looking for 5 minutes. I get hot I already have the phone in my hand while I am waiting for an answer. What do you guys think. Am I nuts. And do I need to chill out a bit. But if I chill out and something happens. I would never ever forgive myself EVER!! Any advice? you guys seem to be very smart and full of ideas

So Somer's parents are seperated and from what they told us it sounds like her mom was at home the day she went missing....was it  her day off or does she not work...if she does not work and is seperated from her husband how does she pay the bills? Is this William Murphy her boyfriend and he takes care of them?

One news report said a back pack with a skull on it and another said that it was a Hannah Montanna one
One news report says that the mom reported her missing at 5 and the other at 6:30
One news report says that they do not think that she was abducted another says that they do not think that this is related to her running away a year ago
So if she was not abducted and she did not run away then WTH? I am very disappointed in the delay of the Amber Alert, I think that it should have been lit up yesterday.
God Please bring Somer Home Alive and Well!!!

I think that it is better to be over protective than not enough especially in these days and times....You are just being a good mother....just don't let it drive you crazy ....Be there when you can and trust God to be there when you can't...JMO

I did not see that one.  But just saw an interview that they were doing with the grandmother who was standing outside the residence which I believe was the Horton residence. When I looked at the interview showing on HLN I could see the address #s with the exception of the last digit, only got to see 170?.

Will try to catch it the next time they play the interview.

I know they said that her siblings were in grade school too but do we know if they were older or younger than Somer?

I watched again twocents and the same thing.  It almost looked as if there maybe a shadow of a tree branch or that the last digit ornament is missing and a handwritten 2 in its place or I'm seeing things.

However no 1702 listed in the reverse address white page directory.
