Pope Francis: ‘Path to climate resilience impeded by short-term greed’
16 May 2024, 10:46

Pope Francis addresses participants in a Vatican summit on the climate crisis, and encourages the international community to leverage the regenerative power of nature to move toward climate resilience.
By Devin Watkins

The Pontifical Academies of Science and Social Sciences is hosting a three-day summit in the Vatican that brings together mayors, governors, and experts to explore the theme: “From Climate Crisis to Climate Resilience.”

Pope Francis held an audience with participants in the summit on Thursday, the second day of the event.

In his address, the Pope lamented the worsening data regarding climate change, calling for urgent action “to protect people and nature.”

As developing nations suffer more directly the effects of climate change, he asked the political leaders from various nations whether “we are working for a culture of life or for a culture of death”.

“The wealthier nations, around 1 billion people, produce more than half the heat trapping pollutants,” said the Pope. “On the contrary, the 3 billion poorer people contribute less than 10%, yet they suffer 75% of the resulting damage.”

“It is the young, sustained by the hope founded on faith, who can break the bonds of antagonism, misunderstanding and prejudice that for centuries held Catholics and Orthodox back from acknowledging one another as brothers and sisters.”

These words of Pope Francis were directed to Metropolitan Agathanghelos, Director General, Apostoliki Diakonia of the Church of Greece, and to the Delegation of the Theological College of Athens who visited him on Thursday in the Vatican.

After the meeting with the Pope, Mr. Edgars Rinkēvičs subsequently met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, accompanied by Fr Daniel Pacho, Undersecretary for the Multilateral Sector of the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations.

A Statement from the Holy See Press Office called the discussions at the Secretariat of State “cordial”, and noted that “satisfaction was expressed for the good relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Latvia, highlighting the importance of the Christian faith in Latvian society.”

Pope: Sport is a place for encounter and fraternity
16 May 2024, 15:45

Pope Francis sends a message to an international Conference on Sports and Spirituality in which he reiterates his belief the “amateur” spirit must never be lacking in sports as it preserves the genuine values of competition.
By Vatican News

Pope Francis sent a message of greeting and encouragement to participants in the International Conference on Sports and Spirituality taking place in Rome on May 16-18.

The event is organized and promoted by the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and the French Embassy to the Holy See within the framework of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Reflecting on the fact that we live in a world where sports play an increasingly central role in society, the Pope notes that “The discipline and temperance of athletes, as well as healthy competition, have often been valued as metaphors for virtuous Christian life.”

Even today, he continues, “this metaphor can be effective for all those who, in some way, desire and strive to please God and be His friend.”

Indeed, he adds, quoting the apostle Paul who has compared spiritual life to athletic activity more than once, sports can be practised not merely as a pastime but as a vehicle for personal development and communal cohesion.

"Sport (…) is a way to spend leisure time that arouses interests and opportunities for meeting, brings people together, creates communities, energizes life in an orderly manner, and promotes dreams, especially in younger generations," he said.

By Courtney Mares
Rome Newsroom, May 16, 2024 / 11:49 am

Pope Francis will be joined by Italian actor Roberto Benigni and soccer star Gianluigi Buffon as the pontiff celebrates World Children’s Day over the last weekend in May.

The Vatican announced on Thursday that World Children’s Day will “kick off” on Saturday, May 25, at 3:30 p.m. with a soccer match between kids and professional soccer players in Rome’s Olympic Stadium led by Buffon, the goalie who helped Italy achieve victory in the 2006 World Cup.

On the second day of the event, Benigni, best known for his Oscar-winning film “Life Is Beautiful,” will give a short speech at the end of Pope Francis’ Mass and Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, May 26.

World Children’s Day is a new initiative by Pope Francis sponsored by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education in collaboration with the Catholic community of Sant’Egidio, the Auxilium Cooperative, and the Italian Football Federation.

The Vatican is expecting children from more than 100 countries to travel to Rome for the weekend event with the pope.

Pope Francis says conservative critics have a ‘suicidal attitude’
By Jonah McKeown
CNA Staff, May 16, 2024 / 16:58 pm

In an interview with “60 Minutes” airing this Sunday, Pope Francis takes aim at his “conservative critics” in the United States, reportedly saying a conservative is someone who “clings to something and does not want to see beyond that.”

“It is a suicidal attitude,” the pope said as reported by “60 Minutes,” which released a brief clip of the upcoming interview conducted by CBS’ Nora O’Donnell.

“Because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box.”

The full interview, conducted April 24, will air as part of “60 Minutes” on May 19 from 7-8 p.m. ET on CBS and will be available on Paramount+. More of the interview will air in an hourlong prime-time special on Monday, May 20, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+.

Pope Francis calls the catacombs a sign of hope
17 May 2024, 10:53

Pope Francis meets with participants of the Plenary Meeting of the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology, and stresses the importance of the catacombs during the upcoming Jubilee year.
By Sr. Francine-Marie Cooper, ISSM

During a meeting in the Vatican on Friday morning with participants of the Plenary Meeting of the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology, Pope Francis acknowledged that the “Christian catacombs will naturally be one of the most significant destinations” for pilgrims during the Jubilee year.

The Holy Father welcomed the group and expressed his gratitude for the work of the former President of the Pontifical Commission, Cardinal Ravasi, and for the commitment of the current President, Monsignor Pasquale Iacobone, who has been leading the Commission since 2022.

Pope Francis thanked the Commission for its initiatives to make the catacombs better known and understood.

He mentioned in particular the creation of “the Catacombs Days, with the involvement of families and children in educational workshops; the presentation of the various catacombs both on television programs and on social media; the awarding of scholarships; the annual archaeological research projects in collaboration with various universities.”

Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith releases new document: New norms regarding cases of reported supernatural phenomena

Vatican releases new norms on alleged supernatural phenomena
17 May 2024, 12:00

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith releases a document detailing new norms regarding cases of reported supernatural phenomena. As a rule, neither the local bishop nor the Holy See will declare that these phenomena are of supernatural origin, but will only authorize and promote devotion and pilgrimages.
By Vatican News

A new document from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published on Friday, May 17, has updated the norms for discerning alleged supernatural phenomena. The norms come into force on Sunday, May 19, the feast of Pentecost.

The document is preceded by a detailed presentation by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery, followed by an introduction and six possible conclusions. The procedure allows for faster decisions while respecting popular devotion.

As a rule, the Church’s authority will no longer be engaged to officially define the supernatural nature of a phenomenon, a process that can require large amounts time to thoroughly study an event.

Another new norm involves the explicit involvement of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which must approve the local bishop’s final decision and which has the authority to intervene motu proprio at any time.

Many cases in recent decades have involved the former Holy Office, even when individual bishops have expressed themselves. However, the interventions have usually remained behind the scenes and were never made public.

The Dicastery’s new explicit involvement also relates to the difficulty in circumscribing phenomena, which in some cases reach national and even global dimensions, “meaning that a decision made in one Diocese has consequences also elsewhere.”

Cardinal Fernández: With new norms it will be easier to decide on Medjugorje
17 May 2024, 18:08

The Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith responds to journalists about the "Medjugorje case" during the press conference presenting the new norms for discerning presumed supernatural phenomena.
By L’Osservatore Romano

"Regarding Medjugorje, no conclusion has been reached yet, but with these guidelines, we believe it will be easier to proceed and reach a conclusion," said Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, during the press conference presenting the new norms for discerning presumed supernatural phenomena. Responding to a journalist's question, he added that "for other cases that have been present at the Dicastery for many years, these guidelines will make it easier to arrive at a prudential conclusion." He continued, "In many cases, these phenomena have grown well and normally. Sometimes a phenomenon can be easily managed without issues, producing positive outcomes: this has happened in most sanctuaries. Many frequently visited sanctuaries by the faithful originated from a similar experience. There has never been a declaration, neither from the bishop nor the Dicastery, and they have grown normally without problems as popular devotion." In short, the Cardinal explained, "a beautiful phenomenon can grow" without requiring "a declaration of supernatural origin. In the cases of Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe, their enormous growth did not depend on a declaration of supernatural origin."

The National Eucharistic Revival recleased a detailed map of the upcoming pilgrimage routes ahead of the National Eucharistic Congress. | Credit: National Eucharistic Revival

The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage kicks off this weekend as Catholics observe the solemnity of Pentecost on Sunday, May 19. All are welcome to participate in Eucharistic processions and other prayer-filled events taking place across the country over the next two months.

To take part in an event near you, here’s a guide to finding all the stops along the four pilgrimage routes crossing the country and converging at the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis on July 16.

The stops include shrines, cathedrals, parishes, cultural sites, and parks. At the stops, the faithful in the area will have the chance to join in the national event by participating in Mass, adoration, devotions, praise and worship, and fellowship as well as have opportunities to accompany the Eucharist on the streets as part of the pilgrimage.

Tim Glemkowski, CEO of the National Eucharistic Congress, Inc., said that “a cross-country pilgrimage of this scale has never been attempted before.”

Pope grants the title of Blessed to Guido of Montpellier
18 May 2024, 12:57

Pope Francis issues a Motu Proprio “Fide Incensus” for granting the title of Blessed to the 12th century French religious Guido of Montpellier, calling him a "humble and modest servant" of the needy, sick, and abandoned children.
By Vatican News

"The example of Guido of Montpellier, a man absolutely unique in his humble spiritual life, in obedience and service to the poor, has always attracted and inspired us. We believe, therefore, that the time has come for him to be presented in a special way to the Church of God, to which he continues to speak through his faith and works of mercy."

With a Motu Proprio titled 'Fide Incensus', Pope Francis on Saturday granted the title of Blessed to Guido of Montpellier, raising his liturgical cult to the altars for the orders, congregations, and communities inspired by the charism of Santo Spirito in Sassia.

Pope to priests in Verona: Confession must not be torture, forgive everything
18 May 2024, 09:01

Pope Francis opens his pastoral visit to Verona with a meeting with deacons, priests, and consecrated men and women. He urges each person to embrace their calling and boldly undertake their mission, celebrating the city's legacy of faith, charity, and hope.
By Francesca Merlo

Pope Francis travelled on Saturday to Verona for a one-day pastoral visit, meeting first with the northern Italian city's deacons, priests, and consecrated men and women.

As they gathered in what the Pope described as one of Italy’s most beautiful Romanesque Basilicas, the Basilica of Saint Zeno, Pope Francis said that the architecture reminded him of a boat, and that together they were part of the boat of the Lord “navigating the seas of history to spread the joy of the Gospel.”

With this image in mind, Pope Francis offered two reflections on religious life.

Pope to children in Verona: With your friend Jesus, go against the tide!
18 May 2024, 11:27

Encountering children in the Italian city of Verona, Pope Francis urges them to be empowered by the joy of Jesus' love and friendship to go against conventional thinking, to pursue what is good, and to work toward peace.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

With the joy of Jesus' love and faith, you can be peacemakers and can surpass all difficulties...

This was the comforting reminder Pope Francis offered children and young people in Verona on Saturday morning, during his one-day pastoral visit to the northern Italian city, during which he responded to three questions, before leading them in prayer.

When asked how to discern Jesus' voice, the Holy Father called on the children to recall how great they feel when they do something good, and how bad they feel when they do something wrong. As the children enthusiastically responded to the Pope's questions, he explained that the good feeling they experience after doing a good gesture is how they feel as the Lord speaks to them.

The next question dealt with how to be peacemakers. In this context, the Pope encouraged them to, together,  "be a sign of peace," in which they listen to, share, and play with one another, without fighting.

The final question was about maintaining faith even at difficult times.

Pope Francis meets with thousands of people in Verona for the Arena of Peace event, and urges regular people to take the cause of peace in hand instead of waiting on world leaders.
By Devin Watkins

Around 12,500 people gathered in Verona on Saturday for the “Arena of Peace – Justice and Peace Shall Embrace” event, which was chaired for the first time by Pope Francis.

During the nearly two-hour-long event in the ancient Roman amphitheatre, the Pope took several questions from people who participated in various roundtables focused on themes ranging from migration to the economy and from the environment to disarmament.

Pope Francis visits Verona’s Montorio prison, urging detainees to “talk to God about our pain and help each other carry it.”
By Joseph Tulloch

The longest appointment on Pope Francis’ busy schedule for his day-long visit to Verona was his stop at the city’s Montorio prison.

A large number of inmates and staff gathered on the institution’s sports field to greet the Pope as he arrived, while others watched from their cell windows.

After listening to speeches from the prison director, Francesca Gioieni, and Duarte, a young inmate, the Pope gave a short address.

Pope at Mass in Verona: 'The Holy Spirit changes our lives’
18 May 2024, 17:00

Pope Francis presides at the Vigil Mass of Pentecost in Verona highlighting the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, and encouraging Christians to be open to letting the Spirit change their hearts.
By Linda Bordoni

Speaking during his homily at the Vigil Mass of Pentecost in the Bentegodi Stadium in Verona, Pope Francis reflected on the centrality and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

In his unscripted homily, the Pope began by recounting a story from the Acts of the Apostles where Paul visits a Christian community and asks, "Have you received the Holy Spirit?" The community’s response he said was telling: "What is the Holy Spirit?"

This lack of understanding, he continued, mirrors the understanding of many modern Christians: "I think that today, if I ask many Christian communities who the Holy Spirit is, they wouldn’t know how to respond."
